Though he is disguised（掩飾） as an old beggar, Odysseus makes the suitors amazed at the muscular body of his as he strips off his cloak. Odysseus knocks out Irus with one blow to the ear. The suitors congratulate Odysseus and reward him with food. Odysseus warns them that the lord（耶和華，上帝） of the house will return soon and with his revenge through blood. While the suitors are unsuccessfully trying to string the bow, Odysseus reveals himself to two faithful servants, Eumaeus（歐麥俄斯） the swineherd（養(yǎng)豬的人） and Philoetius（菲洛提奧斯） the cattleman. When all the suitors have failed the test to string the bow, Odysseus offers to try. The suitors protest, but Penelope insists that all should be allowed and try their hands on the bow, although she assures the group that even if he strings it she will not marry him.
