re work for our area that needs jobs badl y. McDonal d’s say they are i nterested i n doi ng what i s ri ght for the m uni ty and bei ng a god nei ghbour. So I think they wi l be concerned about provi di ng parki ng for the cars i n our m ai n street. Many of our young peopl e wil l be onl y too happy to work for the pany. McDonal d’s m akes a promi se to the peopl e that work for them . They say, “We val ue you, your growi ng skil ls and your hel p to the pany. ”I can see nothi ng but good i f thi s pany es to buil d i ts restaurant in our town. AGAINST BUILDING A MCDONALD’S I am very worri ed about McDonal d’s buil di ng a restaurant i n our hom etown. We are a sm al l muni ty and we enjoy our l ocal di shes. I am not sure i f McDonal d’s food i s as heal thy as they say i n thei r advertisem ents. When sci enti sts l ook at i t careful ly, they fi nd high l evel s of fat, sugar and sal t. This i s very worrying. Too m any young peopl e are getti ng fat through eati ng too m uch fatty food. McDonal d’s is not gi ving young peopl e a good i dea of what a heal thy di et shoul d be. Local Chi nese food, on the other hand, i s ful of fresh vegetabl es and fresh m eat and fi sh. The food at a McDonal d’s restaurant is al ways the sam e, so I wonder if i t i s m ade or brought i n from el sewhere. Al though it i s freshl y coked, it m ust be l ess heal thy than our own l ocal l y grown and cooked Chinese food. I al so worry about al l those cars bri ngi ng peopl e to buy food at McDonal d’s. First, there woul d be petrol fum es(氣體 ), whi ch wi l m ake our cl ean ai r di rty. Second, there’s the probl em of al l those cars that try to park and prevent other cars from movi ng qui ckl y through our town. I’m sure m any young peopl e woul d be happy to work for McDonal d’s but wil l they be treated fai rly? In Am eri can, McDonal d’s does not al l ow workers’ uni ons to operate i n i ts restaurants and these are peopl e who speak up for the workers. If, as they say, the workers are happy with them , why shoul d they fear some workers joi ni ng a uni on? So when I consi der the food, the cars and the jobs, I thi nk we shoul d not al ow McDonal d’s to bui l d their restaurant i n our town. Uni t 3 the mi l i on pound bank note Act I, Scene 3 N arrator: It is thethei r i nstrum ents are dressed up for wi nter. Final y, you wil l probabl y want to si t down i n a cafe wo warm up an to plan tom orrow. You mi ght joi n the snowm obi le races – or m aybe you shoul d just sl eep i n! Unit 2 COME AND EAT H ERE (1) Wang Peng sat i n his em pty restaurant feeli ng very frustrated. It had been a very strange m orni ng. Usual l y he got up earl y and prepared hi s m enu of barbecued m utton kebabs, roast pork, sti rfri ed vegetabl es and fried ri ce. Then by l unchtim e they woul d al be sol d. By now hi s restaurant ought to be ful of peopl e. But not today! Why was that? What coul d have happened? He thought of hi s m utton, beef and bacon cooked in the hotest, fi nest oi l. H is col a was sugary and col d, and hi s i ce cream was m ade of mi lk, cream and del ici ous frui t. “Nothi ng coul d be better, ” he thought. Suddenl y he saw his fri end Li Chang hurryi ng by. “H el l o, Lao Li, ” he cal l ed, “Your usual ?” But Li Chang seem ed not to hear. What was the matter? Som ething terri bl e m ust have happened i f Li Chang was not i ng to eat i n hi s restaurant as he al ways di d. Wang Peng fol l owed Li Chang into a new smal e saw a si gn i n the wi ndow. Ti red of al l that fat? Want to l ose wei ght? Com e i nsi de Yong H ui ’s sl imm i ng restaurant. O nl y sl imm i ng foods served here. Make yourself thi n again. Curi osity drove Wang Peng i nsi de. It was ful of peopl e. The hostess, a very thin l ady cam e forward. “Wel e, ” she sai d. “My nam e i s Yong H ui . I’l l hel p you l ose wei ght and be fi t i n two weeks i f you eat here every day. ” Then she gave a m enu to Wang Peng. There were few choi ces of food and dri nk on i t: just ri ce, raw vegetabl es served i n vi negar, frui t and water. Wang Peng was am azed at this and especi al l y at the pri ces. It cost m ore than a good m eal i n hi s restaurant! H e coul d not bel i eve hi s eyes. H e threw down the m enu and huri ed outsi de. O n hi s way hom e he thought about hi s own m enu. Di d i t m ake peopl e fat? Perhaps he shoul d go to the li brary and fi nd out. H e coul d not have Yong H ui getting away wi th tel li ng peopl e l i es! H e had better do som e research! At the li brary Wang Peng was surpri sed to find that hi s restaurant served far too m uch fat and Yong H ui’s far too li ttl e. Even though her custom ers mi ght get thi n after eati ng Yong Hui’s food, they were not eati ng enough energygi vi ng food to keep them fit. They woul d be e ti red very qui ckl y. Wang Peng fel t m ore hopeful as he drove back hom e. Perhaps wi th a di scount and a new si gn he coul d win hi s custom ers back! So he wrote: Want to feel fi t and energeti c? Com e and eat here! Di scounts today! O ur food gi ves you energy al day! The peti ti on between the two restaurants was on! COME AND EAT H ERE (2) A week later, Wang Peng’s restaurant was nearl y ful l and he fel t happier. Perhaps he woul d be abl e to earn his l i vi ng after al l and not have to cl ose his restaurant. H e di d not l ook forward to being i n debt because hi s restaurant was no l onger popul ar. He sm il ed as he wel ed som e custom ers warml y at the dor but the sm il e l eft hi s face when he saw Yong H ui wal ki ng i n. She di d not l ook happy but gl ared at hi m. “May I ask what you were doi ng i n m y restaurant the other day? I thought you were a new custom er and now I know that you onl y cam e onl y to spy on m e and m y m enu, ” she shouted. “Pl ease excuse m e, ” he calm ly expl ained,“I wanted to know where al m y custom ers had gone last wek.
