The hostess, a very thin l ady cam e forward. “Wel e, ” she sai d. “My nam e i s Yong H ui . I’l l hel p you l ose wei ght and be fit i n two weeks i f you eat here every day. ” Then she gave a menu to Wang Peng. There were few choi ces of food and dri nk on i t: just rice, raw vegetabl es served i n vi negar, fruit and water. Wang Peng was am azed at thi s and especi al y at the pri ces. It cost m ore than a good m eal i n hi s restaurant! H e coul d not beli eve hi s eyes. H e threw down the m enu and hurri ed outsi de. O n hi s way home he thought about hi s own m enu. Di d i t m ake peopl e fat? Perhaps he shoul d go to the li brary and find out. He coul d not have Yong H ui getting away wi th tel li ng peopl e l i es! H e had better do som e research! At the li brary Wang Peng was surprised to fi nd that hi s restaurant served far too m uch fat and Yong H ui’s far too l ittl e. Even though her custom ers m i ght get thi n after eati ng Yong H ui ’s food, they were not eati ng enough energygi vi ng food to keep them fi t. They woul d be e ti red very qui ckly. Wang Peng fel t m ore hopeful as he drove back hom e. Perhaps wi th a di scount and a new si gn he coul d wi n hi s custom ers back! So he wrote: Want to fel fi t and energeti c? Com e and eat here! Di scounts today! O ur food gi ves you energy al day! The petiti on between the two restaurants was on! COME AND EAT H ERE (2) A week l ater, Wang Peng’s restaurant was nearl y ful and he fel t happi er. Perhaps he woul d be abl e to earn hi s l i vi ng after al l and not have to cl ose his restaurant. H e di d not l ook forward to being i n debt because hi s restaurant was no l onger popul ar. He sm il ed as he wel ed som e customers warml y at the dor but the smi l e l eft hi s face when he saw Yong H ui wal ki ng i n. She di d not l ok hapy but gl ared at him . “May I ask what you were doing i n m y restaurant the other day? I thought you were a new customer and now I know that you onl y cam e onl y to spy on m e and m y m enu,” she shouted. “Pl ease excuse m e, ” he calm l y expl ai ned, “I wanted to know where al m y custom ers had gone last week. I fol owed one of them and found them i n your restaurant. I don’t want to upset you, but I found your menu so l imi ted that I stopped worryi ng and started adverti si ng the benefi ts of m y food. Why don’t you sit down and try a m eal ?” Yong H ui agreed to stay and soon they were both enjoying the dum pl i ngs and breast of chi cken cooked wi th garli c. When they were served the i ce cream, Yong H ui began to l ook il l. “I fel si ck with al thi s fat and heavy food, ”she sai d, “I m iss m y vegetabl es and frui t.”Wang Peng was enjoyi ng a second pl ate of dum pl i ngs so he si ghed. “Yes, ”he added, “and I woul d m i ss m y dum pl i ngs and fatty pork. Don’t you get ti red qui ckl y?” “Wel l, I do have to rest a l ot, ”adm i ted Yong H ui. “But don’t you thi nk i t woul d be better i f you were a bi t thi nner? I’m sure you woul d feel m uch heal thi er.” They began to tal k about m enus and bal anced di ets. “Accordi ng to m y research, nei ther your restaurant nor mi ne offers a bal anced di et,”expl ai ned Wang Peng.“I don’t offer enough fi bre and you don’t ofer enough body–bui l di ng and energy–gi vi ng foods. Perhaps we ought to bi ne our i deas and provi de a bal anced m enu wi th foods ful of energy and fi bre. ”So that i s what they di d. They served raw vegetables wi th the ham burgers and boil ed the potatoes rather than fryi ng them . They served fresh frui t with the ice cream. In thi s way they cut down the fat and i ncreased the fi bre i n the m eal . Thei r bal anced di ets becam e such a succes that before l ong Wang Peng becam e slim m er and Yong Hui put on more weight. After som e tim e the two found that thei r busi ness cooperati on had turned i nto a personal one . Final y they got m ari ed and li ved happil y ever after. FOR BUILDING A MCDONALD’S I was exci ted when I heard that our m uni ty was to have i ts own McDonald’s restaurant. I thought about al those young peopl e who woul d not have to go to the next town to buy thei r favouri te burgers and chi ps. McDonal d’s cares about heal thy eati ng too and works wi th sci entists to provi de fod that i s of hi gh quali ty, safe and heal thy. It i s al so cheap . They often provi de sal ads as wel as burgers and chi ps. You can al so choose between col a and mi l k shakes(奶昔 ). Of course i t al so m eans m ore work for our area that needs jobs badl y. McDonal d’s say they are i nterested i n doi ng what i s ri ght for the m uni ty and bei ng a god nei ghbour. So I think they wi l be concerned about provi di ng parki ng for the cars i n our m ai n street. Many of our young peopl e wil l be onl y too happy to work for the pany. McDonal d’s m akes a promi se to the peopl e that work for them . They say, “We val ue you, your growi ng skil ls and your hel p to the pany. ”I can see nothi ng but good i f thi s pany es to buil d i ts restaurant in our town. AGAINST BUILDING A MCDONALD’S I am very worri ed about McDonal d’s buil di ng a restaurant i n our hom etown. We are a sm al l muni ty and we enjoy our l ocal di shes. I am not sure i f McDonal d’s food i s as heal thy as they say i n thei r advertisem ents. When sci enti sts l ook at i t careful ly, they fi nd high l evel s of fat, sugar and sal t. This i s very worrying. Too m any young peopl e are getti ng fat through eati ng too m uch fatty food. McDonal d’s is not gi ving young peopl e a good i dea of what a heal thy di et shoul d be. Local Chi nese food, on the other hand, i s ful of fresh vegetabl es and fresh m eat and fi sh. The food at a McDonal d’s restaurant is al ways the sam
