I haven’t thought about him for a week.” (Hemingway,1954: 266) Brett was only to marry Mike mainly because she was tired of living alone in this cruel world and Mike’s personality and his rich family can meet her demands. Brett considered Mike as a man who could provide her sensual enjoyment and financial need. In the end of novel, Brett would eventually return to Mike after one affair after another respectively with Cohn and Romero. Although it was obvious that no deep feeling between them, they could have a satisfied life together because they had the same interests such as drinking, dancing and making love so as to obtain the greatest pleasure possible from life．4. An Analysis of the Outlet of Women in The Sun Also Rises Spiritual Dependence on Men Brett Ashley is a strong and independent woman. She has a short hair and a masculine name. With no goals and hopes to guide their lives, men lost in that cruel world. They always want to control the women like Brett and even attempted to gain physical and spiritual fort from them, but they can not get a full mitment from them. On the surface, this seems men in this novel needed her more than she needs them. But actually, Brett’s independence is a problem. Although she refused to mit to any man, she still seemed unfortable being alone. As Jake remarked，“She can’t go anywhere alone.” (Hemingway, 1954:105) She still trying to find a solution to save herself from her inner world. Thus, to a certain extent, Brett Ashley still dependent on men. She rely on Jack and she will show her real deep feelings to no one expect Jack. For example, once the count Mippipopolous said to Brett, “You are always drinking, my dear. Why don’t you just talk?” to which Brett answered, I’ve talked too ruddy much. I’ve talked myself all out to Jake.”(Hemingway, 1954: 66) In the end, Jack still gives her emotional support. Although she refused to live with Jack Barnes, because of his inpetence, she still will turn to Jack to looking for fort and help. Also, Brett needed to sleep with Romero in order to increase her selfrespect. She said, “You know,” Brett said, “he’d only been with two women before. He nevercared about anything but bul. Fighting, I don’t know. He thinks it was me. Not the show in general. ”(Hemingway, 1954:267) Brett felt very proud and that reflected her relationships with men was just like a battlefield to her, in this kind of battlefields, she could test her charm. Finally, although Brett does not like Mike at all , no longer believe in marriage, she decided to marry Mike, and Mike is a constantly drunk Scottish veterans with a terrible temper and went bankrupt. Because when she was tired of living alone in this cruel world, she needs to find a man to get a traditional form of marriage to get a sense of security. Financial dependence on men In terms of Brett’s financial position, she never had any money, “She never has any money. She gets five hundred quid a year and pays three hundred and fifty of it in interest to Jews. ”(Hemingway, 1954:196 ), but she seemed not be very interested in money. In this novel, she refused to go with the count Mippipopolous even if he gave her ten thousand dollars, which is a big amount of money. More importantly, when she made Romero leave her, he tried to give her a lot of money, but she refused his offer, even though she had no single cent on her, because she gave all her
