It was al so a treasure decorated with gol d and jewel s, which took the country’s best artists about ten years to m ake. In fact, the room was not m ade to be a gi ft. It was desi gned for the pal ace of Fredri ck I. H owever, the next Ki ng of Prussi a, Fredri ck Wi l i am I, to whom the am ber room bel onged, deci ded not to keep i t. In 1716 he gave i t to Peter the Great. In return, the Czar sent hi m a troop of hi s best sol diers. So the Amber Room became part of the Czar’s winter pal ace in St Petersburg. About four metres l ong, the room served as a sm al l recepti on hal l for im portant vi stors. Later, Catherine Ⅱ had the Am ber Room m oved to a pal ace outsi de St Petersburg where she spent her summ ers. She tol d her arti sts to add m ore detai l s to i t. In 1770 the room was pl eted the way she wanted. Alm ost six hundred candl es li t the room , and i ts m irrors and pi ctures shone li ke gol d. Sadl y, al though the Am ber Room was si dered one of the wonders of the worl d, i t i s now mi ssi ng. In Septem ber 1941, the N azi arm y was near St Petersburg. Thi s was atim e when the two countri es were at war. Before the N azis coul d get to the summ er pal ace, the Russi ans were abl e to rem ove som e furni tures and sm al l art objects from the Am ber Rom. H owever, som e of the N azis secretl y stol e the room i tsel f. In l ess than two days 100000 pi eces were put i nsi de twentyseven wooden boxes. There i s no doubt that the boxes were then put on a train for Koni gsberg, whi ch was at a ti m e a German ci ty on the Bal ti c Sea. After that, what happened to the Am ber Room remai ns a m ystery. Recentl y, the Russi ans and Germ ans have bui lt a new Am ber Room at the sum mer pal ace. By studyi ng ol d photos of the form er Am ber room , they have m ade the new one l ooke li ke the ol d one. In 2020 i t was ready for the peopl e of St Petersburg when they cel ebrated the 300th bithday of thei r ci ty. A fact of an opi ni on What is a fact? Is it som ethi ng that peopl e beli eve? N o. A fact is anythi ng that can be proved. For exam pl e, i t can be proved that Chi na has m ore peopl e than any other country i n the worl d. This i s a fact. Then what i s an opi ni on? An opi ni on i s what someone bel i eves i s true but has not been proved. So an opi noi on i s not good evi dence in a trai l. For example, it is an opinion if you say ―Cats are better pets than dogs‖. It may be true, but it is difficul t to prove. Some peopl e m ay not agree wi th thi s opi ni on but they al so canot prove that they are right. In a trail , a judge m ust deci de which eyewi tneses to bel ieve and whi ch not to bel i eve. The judge does not consi der what each eyewi tness l ooks li ke or where that person li ves or works. H e/She onl y cares about whether the eyewi tnes has gi ven true i nform ation, whi ch m ust be facts rather than opi nions. This ki nd of i nform ati on i s cal l ed evi dence. Bi g Feng to the rescue H is friends and famil y cal him ―Big Feng‖ because he is bery tal l and pl ayed basketbal as a young man. But he is al so big i n a di fferent way — he fi ghts hard to protect China’s past. H is real name is Feng Jicai and he has written many novel s about l ife in China. Several years ago, however, he put down hi s pen for a whi l e and began to protect the cl tural reli cs i n Ti anji n, where he li ves. O nce som eon asked hi m why he no l onger wrote. H e repli ed that at the m om ent he fel t protecti ng cul tural rel i cs was more im portant. Feng loves hi s hom etown. H e beli eves that ol d thi ngs m ust be gi ven a pl ave next to new thi ns, or people wil son fet ther great past. H e does not m ake speeches to get others to hel p hi m i n hi s projects. Instead he goes out and does what he can hi m esel f. If others fol ow him , so m uch the beter. O ne of hi s bi ggest projects was to protect the ol dest street i n Ti anji n. Al ong that street som e shops had done busi ness for seven hundred years. Al thought the ci ty governm ent rebuil t thi s street, they di d save i ts ol dest buil di ng. Another project was m ore successful : he persuaded the ci ty governm ent to buy som e land i n the centre of the ci ty so i t coul d not be sol d for busi nesses. Thi s area i s very im protant for the hi story of Ti anji n. It was here that the ci ty was first buil t duri ng the Song Dynasty. Later many treasures were found here. To Feng, di ggi ng down i n to the earth i s li ke readi ng page after page of a book. Each dynasty found i n the earth is l i ke an i nteresti ng story. N ot l ong ago he and other wri ters and arti sts took photos of the ol d parts of Ti anji n. The photos were put i nto a book whi ch was very popul ar. The m oney from the book hel ps hi s prjects. Once, and ol d m an asked Feng to si gn a book for him , sayi ng he woul d gi ve i t to his grandson who was not yet born. Feng was gl ad to do it he knows that he past i s not only for us to enjoy but al so for the chil dren of the future.
