In 1620 som e Bri ti sh settl ers m oved to Am erican. Later i n the 18th century som e Bri ti sh people were taken to Australi a too. Engl i sh began to be spoken i n both countri es. Final y by the 19th century the l anguage was setl ed. At that time two big changes in Engl ish spel ing happened: first Samuel Johnson wrote his dictionary and l ater Noah Webster wrote The Am eri can Dicti onary of the English Language. The l atter gave a separate identity to American Engl ish spel ling. Engli sh now i s al so spoken as a forei gn or second l anguage i n South Asi a. For exam ple, India has a very large number of fluent Engli sh speakers because Britain rul ed Indi a from 1765 to 1947. duri ng that ti me Engl ish became the l anguage for governm ent and educati on.
