The Mil u deer li ked the col, wet weather i n England and thei r num ber i ncreased year by year. As a resul t, when in 1985 the governm ent of Chi na wanted to rei ntroduce the Mil u deer,the Duke of Bedford was happy to hel p. The fi rst deer cam e back to Chi na to the N anhai zi Mil u Park 20 kil om eters south of Bei ji ng and the centre i n Dafeng, Ji ngsu Provi nce. The deer centai nl y seem happy to be back in Chi na because thei r num bers have grown rapi dl y. There are now so m any of them that a new park has been opened for them i n H ebei Provi nce. At the m om ent the Mil u deer l ive i n centres where they are bei ng wel protected and care for . It i s hoped that one day there wi l be enough anim als to let them li ve i n the wil d agai n. Unit 5 The band that wasn’t Have you ever wanted to be part of a band as a fam ous singer or m usi ci ans? Have you ever dream ed of pl aying i n front of thousands of peopl e at a concert, at whi ch everyone is cl appi ng and apreci ating your m usi c? Do you si ng Karaoke and pretend you are a famous si nger l i ke Song Zuying or Li u H uan? To be honest, a l ot of peopl e attach great i mportance to bei ng ri ch and fam ous. But just now do peopl e form a band? Many m usici ans m eet and form a band because they l i ke to write and pl ay thei r own m usi c. They m ay start as a group of hi ghschool students, for whom practi si ng thei r musi c in som eone’s house i s the fi rst step to fam e. Som eti m es they m ay pl ay to passersby in the street or subway so that they can earn som e extra m oney for them sel ves or to pay for thei r instrum ents. Later they m ay gi ve perform ances i n pubs or clubs, for whi ch they are pai d i n cash. O f course they hope to m ake records i n a studi o and sel l m il li ons of copi es to be e mil li onai res! H owever, there was one band that started i n a di fferent way. It was cal ed the Monkees and began as a TV show. The m usi ci ans were to pl ay jokes on each other as wel as pl ay m usic, m ost of whi ch was based l oosel y on the Beatl es. The TV ani zer had pl anned to fi nd four m usi ci ans who coul d act as wel l as si ng. They put an advertisement i n a newspaper l ooki ng for rock m usi ci ans, but they coul d onl y fi nd one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three m em bers of theband. As som e of these actors coul d not sing wel l enough, they had to rel y on other m usi cians to hel p them . So duri ng the broadcasts they just pretended to si ng. Anyhow thei r perform ances were hum orous enough to be copi ed by other groups. They were so popul ar that thei r fans form ed cl ubs i n order to get m ore fam il i ar wi th them. Each week on TV, the Monkees woul d pl ay and si ng songs wri tten by other musi ci ans. H owever, after a year or so i n whi ch they becam e m ore seri ous about thei r work, the Monkees started to pl ay and si ng thei r own songs l i ke a real band. Then they produced their own records and started touri ng and pl ayi ng their own m usi c. In the USA they becam e even m ore popul ar than the Beatl es and sol d even m ore records. The band broke up about 1970, but happi l y they reuni ted i n the mi d1980s. They produced a new record i n 1996, wi th whi ch they cel ebrated thei r form er tim e as a real band. Freddy the frog(Ⅱ) N ot l ong after Freddy and the band becam e famous, they vi sited Bri tai n on a bri ef tour. Fans showed thei r devoti on by wai ti ng for hours to get ti ckets for thei r concerts . Freddy was now quite confi dent when he went i nto a concert hal l. H e enjoyed si ngi ng and al l the congratul ations afterwards! Hi s most exci ti ng i nvi tati on was to perform on a TV programm e cal ed “ Top of pops “. H e had to go to London, wear an expensi ve suit and gi ve a perform ance to a TV camera. It fel t very strange. But as soon as the program m e was over, the tel ephones whi ch were i n the sam e room started ri ngi ng. Everybody was aski ng when they coul d see Freddy and hi s band again. They were trul y stars. Then thi ngs went wrong. Freddy and hi s band coul d not go out anywhere wi thout bei ng fol owed. Even when they wore sungl asses or beards peopl e recogni zed them . Fans found them even when they went i nto toi let. They tried to hide i n the readi ng room s of li brari es, but i t was usel ess. Som eone was al ways there! Thei r personal li fe was regul arl y di scussed by peopl e who di d not know them but tal ked as i f they cl ose fri ends. At l ast feel i ng very upset and sensi ti ve, Freddy and hi s band reali zed that they m ust l eave the country before i t becam e too painful for them.
