The Speci al Ol ympi c athlete For athl ete Eric Wi li ams gold medals are ni ce, but good sportsmanship is more important. Another project was m ore successful: he persuaded the ci ty government to buy som e l and i n the centre of the city so it coul d not be sol d for busi nesses. Thi s area is very im protant for the history of Ti anjin. It was here that the ci ty was first buil t during the Song Dynasty. Later m any treasures were found here. To Feng, digging down i n to the earth is l ike reading page after page of a book. Each dynasty found i n the earth is l ike an interesting story. Not long ago he and other writers and artists took photos of the ol d parts of Ti anji n. The photos were put i nto a book whi ch was very popul ar. The m oney from the bok hel ps hi s prjects. There are two m ai n sets of Gam es—the Wi nter and the Summ er Ol ym pi cs, and both are hel d every four years on a regul ar basi s. The Wi nter Ol ympics are usual y hel d two years before the Summer Gam es. O nl y athl etes who have reached the agred standard for thei r event wil l be admi ted as petitors. They may e from anywhere i n the worl d. P: Winter Gam es? H ow can the runners enjoy peting in wi nter? And what about the horses? L: O h no! There are no runni ng races or horse ri di ng events. Instead there are peti ti ons li ke ski ng and i ce skating which need snow and i ce. That’s why they’re cal ed the Wi nter O lym pi cs. It’s i n the Summer Ol ympics that you have the runing races, together wi th swimmi ng, sail ing and al the team sports. P: I see. Earl ier you said that athl etes are i nvi ted from al over the worl d. Do you m ean the Greek world? O ur Greek ci ti es used to pete agai nst each other just for the honour of wi ning. No other countri es coul d joi n in, nor coul d sl aves or wom en! L: N owadays any country can take part i f their athl etes are good enough. There are over 250 sports and each one has i ts own standard. Women are not onl y al lowed, but pl ay a very im portant rol e i n gym nasti cs, athleti cs, team sports and … P: Pl ease wai t a m inute!
