The receiver is supposed to reciprocate with almost equal value. So never give a gift that would make it impossible for the, Chinese to reciprocatethis would cause a loss of face and place them in a very difficult position. IV. Suggestions for Improving Communication Skills between Chinese and English In order to make the munication between Chinese and English successful, we should find several effective ways. A. Thinking Globally and Culturally Global village not only brings about frustration but also challenge. To meet these challenges people in China and English countries have to learn each other’s cultures. They need to know how to get along with each other and how to solve problems that inevitably arise. Therefore, it is necessary to team how to municate across cultures. That requires us to learn to think, feel and behave in ways, and develop a broader world view, a more global psychology and the cultural skills necessary for building relationships and resolving problems in a global context. B. Increasing Cultural Awareness The awareness of the culture of our China and English countries forms one of the most important ponents of intercultural petence. Awareness includes the knowledge of the context in which munication occurs and the knowledge of different cultures. The context involves who speaks to whom, about what, for what purpose, when, where and how. It is related to how to fit these situational factors when interacting with others. An intercultural person should be wellinformed of what is appropriate and what is not in a certain situation, the awareness of cultural context may include value systems, world views, norm, national characters and cultural expectations. These are also called the core of culture which determines people’s verbal and nonverbal behaviors. Since munication is contextual, the mastery of the core of culture will secure successful munication. C. Learning Behavioral Skills Learning behavioral skills means our Chinese municators should not only possess the linguistic abilities but also know about the appropriate performance in a given situation or cultural context, so this behavioral petence includes verbal and nonverbal actions whose patterns can be studied, analyzed and learned. These international skills may be acquired in the application of politeness principles, cooperative maxims, face, rules of speaking and other skills. When we do not know how to express ourselves clearly and politely in words, we can use our body languages and make ourselves understood by the English speakers. D. Appreciating the Differences Establishing a right attitude toward cultural differences is one requisite in the munication between China and English countries. It can influence one’s perception of self, of others, and of the culture in which one is living. Our English learners should form a right attitude toward English cultures, ., to be openminded to them. Prejudice and stereotype should be avoided. Prejudice may lead to an intolerant, unfair or biased perception of English culture, and stereotype may lead to the misjudgment of English culture from our own culture’s view. Both of them will make munication difficult. When facing English culture, we should be flexible and able to adapt ourselves to this new situation. “Do as the Romans do” is an effective way for those who are experiencing cultural differences. Therefore, being openminded to cultural difference is a prerequisite to a successful munication with English speakers. V. Conclusion To sum up, Politeness is not only universal but also culturespecific. Whether in the crosscultural munication or in English learning and teaching, it is necessary for us to understand cultural differences and develop and improve our pragmatic petence. Politeness is in all kinds of language all over the world, and different politeness principles and expressions are found in different cultures. Therefore, it has significant meanings to analyze the differences of politeness expressions between Chinese and English. In order to avoid generating the misunderstanding on the issue of politeness, closing human relationship, promoting the people in different cultures to municate, we should use appropriate politeness expressions and grasp the proper politeness expressions in English countries. Only if we understand these differences clearly, and know when and how to use what kind of the politeness principle, can we decrease the times of blunder, can we make sure to use the exact politeness expressions to show our civilization on the base of obeying politeness principles, according to different objects, different times and different situations, to achieve a satisfactory effect of munication.
