There are mainly three kinds of technical documents with respective purposes and foci: (1) The results of pure science (2) The results of applied scientific research (3) The work of the technologist For detailed information, you should skim and scan the prose to determine which kind and focus on different aspects. Tips 1. Pay attention to the specialized terminology of the particular discipline. 2. The great frequency in the use of the passive voice in the prose. 3. Simple present tense is frequently used in expressing the timeless general statement such as natural phenomena, natural law, definition, theorem, formula and so on. *4. Pay more attention to the purpose of the article rather than the means of the experiment. *5. Look for parison of different points of view or experiment results. *6. The ending of a technical prose usually show you the result or conclusion. *7. Special attention to the infinitives and passive voice. Read the following short paragraphs and try to answer the question. On adult intelligence tests, they scored as high as they had as children.
