【正文】 servants.”(Emily Bronte, 2011: 42) He also makes a distinction between Earnshaws and Heathcliff by depriving him of any sort of education. Those all give Heathcliff the idea of taking revenge on Hindley for all the abuse he suffers. “I’m trying to settle how I shall pay Hindley back, I don’t care how long I wait, if I can only do it at last.”(48) Heathcliff manages to ruin Hindley who finally drinks to death, and Heathcliff, the former servant and at that time a mere guest, bees the master of Wuthering Heights. But his thirst for revenge does not end there, but extends to the next generation: “I (Heathcliff) want the triumph of seeing my descendant fairy lord of their estates: my child hiring their children to till their father’s lands for wages”(153). He brutalizes Hareton, the only son of Hindley, in revenge for Hindley’s treatment of himself when he is a little boy. “I’ve got him faster than his scoundrel of a father secured me and lower... You’ll own that I’ve outmatched Hindley there”(157). Because he has created a demonic reality in which his maltreatment of Hareton will enable him to gain revenge against Hindley, and he also maintains his revenge by being extremely possessive of the Wuthering Heights. Hatred for Edgar LintonThere are several opposing characters in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, among whom Heathcliff and Edgar are the best examples. Their childhood, appearance, and relationship with Catherine are quite opposite. The two men have very different childhood. Heathcliff is born into squalor and wanders on the streets of Liverpool until Mr. Earnshaw takes him home and brings him up as one of his own children. He is dirty and his clothes are ragged, “He seems a sullen, patient child, hardened perhaps to illtreatment”(Bronte, 2011: 30). As a farmhand, he does the work of servants and is teased by Hindley constantly, yet does not shed a tear. Edgar is born in the wealthy Thrushcross Grange with high social status. He is a very handsome gentleman of high education, so he bees the charming prince in the hearts of lots of women, and they are dreaming to marry him. The basic reason that causes the conflicts between the two men is that Edgar marries Catherine, the only love of Heathcliff in his whole life. So Heathcliff developes a great hatred for Edgar.Because Edgar and Isabella are quite different from him and look down upon him, Heathcliff finds the needs to take revenge on them. Heathcliff’s reappearance makes Edgar jealous immediately, which is the first act of revenge. Each time he visits Grange he is challenging Edgar’s authority. And by challenging Edgar’s authority, Heathcliff gains power. Heathcliff’s strong lust for power is fueled by his need for revenge, as a direct result of the negative emotions he has received when he is young. In order to take revenge for Edgar, Heathcliff seduces Edgar’s only sister Isabella to marry him, even enough he does not love her, and cruelly maltreats her. Removing her from Edgar’s authority, thereby he gains control of more characters in the novel. So he is able to wage revenge directly against Isabella through physical and mental battering, which can bring a lot of pain to Edgar indirectly. Heathcliff’s less honorable intentions show that a man ruled by hate will go to extreme lengths in order to gain satisfaction.During the revenge little Linton, Heathcliff and Isabella’s son, is born, which helps Heathcliff gain the plete control of all the characters in Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff lures the young Cathy to his house and forces a marriage between her and his own sickly and repulsive son Linton. After his son’s death, he gains a plete control of Thrushcross Grange, which proves that a man controlled by pure revenge cannot be stopped by passion for human life. Hatred for CatherineThe day before Heathcliff and Catherine know the Linton family, they live in their private island unchecked and love each other very much. However, everything has changed after that night when Catherine is bitten by the Linton’s bulldog and forced to remain at Thrushcross Grangethe Linton’s home, which isolates Catherine from Heathcliff and her former world of reckless freedom. Living among the elegance of the Lintons transforms Catherine from a coarse youth into a delicate lady. And finally she even treats her marriage like this: If she marries Heathcliff she will be a beggar. Even if she is well aware that without Heathcliff she can not live, but the cruel reality reminds her of that marring Edgar will make her bee the greatest woman in the area. The temptation of material benefits and the bourgeois culture society make her betray her love. It is her transformation and betray that alienate Heathcliff, her soul mate and the love of her life. Catherine’s betray and her marriage with Edgar make Heathcliff lose the source of life which he has survived on. It can be said that the love from Catherine is his only possession. He can survive with Catherine’s love even if he loses everything。 but he has nothing without Catherine’s love. When Heathcliff hears that “It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now”(Bronte, 2011: 64) , without hearing the reast of Catherine’s great manifesto of love “My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneatha source of little visible delight, but necessary... But as my own being”.(65) He withdraws in a rage of shame, humiliation, and despair and leaves the house. Three years later, Heathcliff es back with great fortune. He is longing for meeting Catherine, but this time he es back with the plan of taking revenge on people who have made him suffer. So he marries Edgar’s sister Isabella, even though he does not love her, with the intention of making Catherine jealous, and even has a son with Isabella to torture Catherine. In chapter eleven, Heathcliff growls to Catherine: I have a right to kiss her(Isabella), if she chooses。 and you have no right to object. I’m not your husband: you
