【正文】 goal into practise in different ways .For Carrie ,she equates the happiness with material and acquiring it at the cost of sacrificing herself to two Hurstwood, authority is his desire, but he just has acquired it in wrong Drouet, he is the kind of pernon,who just idles away their time and waste their lives. Everyone is struggling for happiness ,but they are walking far from the goal .so what39。s on earth happiness? Dreiser seems gives no ,he is one of man who set the incorrect life goal ,lose themselves in their desire and can not find themselves in the real world In Dreiser39。s life ,his mind experiences several great change. The greatest influence which had a determining effect on his outlook came from Herbert Spernce whose works he read with avidity after 1879. He embraced social Darwinism ,He learned to regard man as merely an animal driven by greed and lust in a struggle for existence in which only the the fittest,the most ruthless , survive .Man is , to him ,only a mechanismreacting to chemic pulsions,and human tragedy es as a result of the collision between man39。s biological needs and society39。s ruthless manipulation .Life is predatory , a game of the lecherous and heartless ,a jungle struggle in which man ,being a waif and an XII interloper in Nature,a wisp in the wind of social forces,39。 is a mere pawn in the general scheme of things. With no power whatever to assert his will. No one is ethically free,everything is determined by a plex of internal chemisms and by the forces of social pressure. Dreiser as well as his three characters in Carrie Sister are represent the state of spirit of majority an that timelose in desire on the way to happiness,which to some extent is the result of the social ,later Dreiser alse was scathingly critical of his own country:The moral and social codes of his America misrepresent the truth of human nature, and so does conventional was Dreiser39。s announced intention to report 39。the coarse and the vulgar and the cruel and the terriblein life in defiance patience and sympathy.
