Appendix II: Reading Text The Worst Kind of Abuse By Sylvia, F. I was born in Goa, India, as one of three children. My family has mixed Indian and Portuguese blood. Many Portuguese had settled in my part of India at one time, bringing with them the Catholic religion. My whole family is Catholic, and I have a strong Catholic faith. This faith has saved my sanity and life. My father died when I was young. I grew up in a family that included my mother, my sister Mavis, and my brother Tony. These names are typical of my region of India, where English is monly spoken along with Gujarati. My mother supported the family. She sent me to an Englishspeaking Catholic school. The nuns liked me because I had athletic ability. I won regional and national trophies for basketball and track, until I damaged my knee in a petition. I also did well in academic classes. I decided to take business courses. After graduating and saying goodbye to the beloved nuns (I still hear from some of them years later), I took a job as a secretary and administrative assistant in a Bombay office. My boss was handsome and charming. His name was R. Despite the difference in religion, we fell in love after working together closely for months. Soon we were married. Almost immediately, R., my new husband, decide to move to the United States, where he felt business would be more profitable. We moved to the state of Virginia, near Washington, . suddenly he didn’t want me to work outside the home any more. He only permitted me to go out with him to the grocery store once per week, and he drove。 I was not allowed to learn to drive. My independent ways were no longer okay. R. allowed me to work at tailoring and sewing clothes in the apartment, but that was all. Fortunately, I had a natural talent for this kind of work. I could remember measurements without writing them down and could see at a glance just how much fabric needed to be taken up or let out. With good advertising, my athome business was soon thriving. I made many friends among the customers who came to the apartment. Meanwhile, R’s business was not doing well. He moved from one business idea to the next, never putting enough time or energy into it to make a success of anything. He became envious that I was so successful and had so many friends. At the same time, I was pregnant with our first child and soon afterwards our second, both girls. This put financial stress on the family, and such stress made R. even angrier. He took his rage out on me through verbal and physical abuse while the children watched. R’s family never approved of my Catholicism or Christianity in general, so they never accepted me as R’s proper wife. They wanted R. to marry a woman of his own religion. R. disliked my religious faith. Whenever his Indian family visited the United States from their adopted country, England, they created problems about the religious difference. One day, after R’s anger and envy got hot, he told me he was taking the children to the KMart to buy those shoes. He grabbed the girls, one three and one two years old, both barefooted, and whisked them into the car. Instead of taking them to the KMart, he took them to Dulles International Airport, from which they flew to England to be with his parents. I never saw the two children again. I hired British detectives and lawyers to search for R. and the children, but every time these professionals got close, R. moved the girls to a new town. Then he found another woman, and together they took the girls to France, where they were lost to the detectives and lawyers for good. My life changed entirely as a result of this. For the first six months after the kidnapping, I was so depressed that I could do nothing but pray to the Virgin Mary and work on clients’ sewing and tailoring. I could not laugh, and I could hardly talk. I prayed for the courage to continue living, even though I thought of suicide. After six months, my strength came back. Finally I bought a car, took driving lessons, and got a job as a tailor at an expensive, wellknown department store. After a year I obtained a divorce. I continued praying at my little candlelit shrine of the Virgin Mary, and I started going to one of the local Catholic churches. At my job I was promoted several times. I was then transferred to Chicago as the supervisor of dozens of tailors in the same department store chain. I recently bought my own home in Chicago. I recognize my children’s birthdays, pray for them, and sometimes look at their old photographs hanging on the wall. The only way I can deal with this great loss is to keep close contact with God and to work as hard as I can.Appendix III Exam Paper of the TextPlease read each description and then make a mark “X” on the blank from your choice of “Agree”, “Disagree” or “I’m not sure” according to your reading prehension Description of the contentAgreeDisagreeI’m not sure1 .The religion of R’s family is Catholicism.
