【正文】 e resource of English, but also the material of the creation of literature. No other book has so penetrated and permeated the hearts and speech of the English race as the Bible. It is difficult for readers who are unfamiliar with the Bible to fully understand literary works with all allusions to the Holy book. The Bible is one of the earliest sources of theme of content for English. In the period of Renaissance, John Milton’s epic Paradise Lost, which is about the overthrow of Satan and the temptation and fall of Adam and Eve, claims its outstanding position in English literature by Milton’s creative modification of the well—known biblical story. Ralpj Waldo Emerson in his SelfReliance employed the story of Joseph to argue his view that one should not hesitate to leave his previous theory because it is inconsistent with the current one. “Leave your theory, as Jaseph his coat in the hand of the Harlot, and flee” (梁工, 2007: 211). The story of Joseph is from Genesis (39: 12). Joseph, the most favored son of Jacob, was sold by his jealous brothers to Potiphar as a slave. Potiphar’s wife wanted to tempt the handsome and pleasant servant by pulling his coat, yet Joseph threw the coat in the bosom of the lady and ran away. Literature is an important subject for English majors. Mastering the background of the literature helps English learners to understand the inner feelings of the authors. Fourthly, the words of the Bible are the familiar ones of the English tongue, and have been kept familiar by the use of the Bible. Swift writes, almost exactly a hundred years after the date of the Authorized Version “The translators of our Bible were masters of an English style much fitter for that work than any which we see in our present writings, which I take to be owing to the simplicity that runs through the whole” (費爾南德,1990:7). Through reading the Bible, we can see that the language style of the Bible is very simple. It contains broken and disconnected sentences. The purpose of the Bible in English is that mon people can read and understand the words in the Bible, so the style of the Bible must be simplicity.5. ConclusionIn Western countries, many people have religious beliefs. Christianity deeply influences people’s thought and plays an important role in Western culture. Christianity and culture are closely related, blending and penetrating into one another. On one hand, the great influence of Christianity is pervasive in every form of culture. On the other hand, by virtue of culture Christianity extends its influence and bees vigorous. Culture is also a very important element in English study. To learn English effectively, students should not only read, listen, speak and make writing smooth, but also understand the social traditions, the cultural thoughts, the value concept, the national emotions and the customs. Ever since Adam’s birth, the best seller in the world so far is the Bible. For most of the westerners, especially the Americans and English, and for the learners of the English language and the English culture, the Bible is an essential necessity. With the spread of Christianity and the Bible’s increasing influence, a lot of expressions from the Bible are widely used. The expressions cover almost all parts of the social and cultural life.Through the analysis of five idioms from biblical stories and the reasons for the Bible’s impact on English, this thesis reveals the inseparability of cultural learning and language studying.
