Gatsby39。s dream is also the expectation of almost all Americans. The funeral of Gatsby is also the funeral of their American dream .The author skillfully described the sorrow of The Lost Generation represented by Gatsby for their broken American dream and condemns the selfish and tyranny of American privileged class who do whatever they want to do disregarding for justice . In spite of differences between the two novel ,they both criticize the American dream .Martin just want to success by writing so that he can make himself deserve Rose .Gatsby, no matter how rich he was, still can not be accepted by the socalled upper class .Therefore, if a man only take the pursuit of wealth and fame and fortune as his goal in life and reached the pathological level, being inhuman, his dream is doomed the fate of perdition sooner or later. In their works, People39。s despair on the American Dream has been extended to the disappointment of the country39。s political, economic ,diplomacy and the country itself .American dream can no longer bring longing and power to people .Its beautiful aura has already faded .Criticism of the American dream is of great significance and aesthetic value .The two writers and the hero in their novels devoted their whole life to pursue the appealing American dream mainly including money ,power and social status .However ,harsh reality gave writers clearly understanding of the lethality of materialism and hedonism .Due to this ,their works deeply showed the disillusionment with the age ,bursting out the real aesthetic value. Just as Lu Xun said :Tragedy shows us the destruction of the most valuable thing in people39。s life. References: 6 [1]Thomas Jefferson :The Declaration of Independence [2]Walter Allen , E. P. Dutton.
