Peace and Development: the Themes of Our Times[00:]Peace and development are the themes of the times. [00:]People across the world should join hands in advancing the lofty cause of peace and development of mankind.[00:]A peaceful environment is indispensable for national, [00:]regional and even global development. [00:]Without peace or political stability there would be no economic progress to speak of. [00:]This has been fully proved by both the past and the present.[00:]In today’s world, the international situation is, on the whole, moving towards relaxation. [00:]However, conflicts and even local wars triggered by various factors have kept cropping up, [00:]and tension still remains in some areas. [00:]All this has impeded the economic development of the countries and regions concerned, [01:]and has also adversely affected the world economy. [01:]All responsible statesmen and governments must abide by the purposes of the UN Charter [01:]and the universally acknowledged norms governing international relations, [01:]and work for a universal, lasting and prehensive peace. [01:]Nobody should be allowed to cause tension or armed conflicts against the interests of the people.[01:]There are still in this world a few interest groups, [01:]which always want to seek gains by creating tension here and there. [01:]This is against the will of the majority of the people and against the trend of the times. [01:]An enormous market demand can be created and economic prosperity promoted [01:]only when continued efforts are made to advance the cause of peace and development, [02:]to ensure that people around the world live and work in peace and contentment [02:]and focus on economic development and on scientific and technological innovation.[02:]I hope that all of us here today will join hands with all other peaceloving people [02:]and work for lasting world peace and the mon development and prosperity [02:]of all nations and regions.[00:]Passage 14. SelfEsteem[00:]Selfesteem is the bination of selfconfidence and selfrespect[00:]—the conviction that you are petent to cope with life’s challenges[00:]and are worthy of happiness.[00:]Selfesteem is the way you talk to yourself about yourself.[00:]Selfesteem has two interrelated aspects。[00:]it entails a sense of personal efficacy and a sense of personal worth.[00:]It is the integrated sum of selfconfidence and selfrespect.[00:]It is the conviction that one is petent to live and worthy of living.[00:]Our selfesteem and selfimage are developed by how we talk to ourselves.[00:]All of us have conscious and unconscious memories of all the times we felt bad or wrong[00:]—they are part of the unavoidable scars of childhood.[01:]This is where the critical voice gets started.[01:]Everyone has a critical inner voice.[01:]People with low selfesteem simply have a more vicious and demeaning inner voice.[01:]Psychologists say that almost every aspect of our lives[01:]—our personal happiness, success, relationships with others, achievement, creativity, dependencies[01:]—are dependent on our level of selfesteem.[01:]The more we have, the better we deal with things.[01:]Positive selfesteem is important because when people experience it,[01:]they feel good and look good, they are effective and productive,[01:]and they respond to other people and themselves in healthy, positive, growing ways.[01:]People who have positive selfesteem know that they are lovable and capable,[01:]and they care about themselves and other people.[02:]They do not have to build themselves up by tearing other people down[02:]or by patronizing less petent people.[02:]Our background largely determines what we will bee in personality[02:]and more importantly in selfesteem.[02:]Where do feelings of worthlessness e from?[02:]Many e from our families,[02:]since more than 80% of our waking hours up to the age of eighteen[02:]are spent under their direct influence.[02:]We are who we are because of where we’ve been.[02:]We build our own brands of selfesteem from four ingredients:[02:]fate, the positive things life offers, the negative things life offers[02:]and our own decisions about how to respond to fate, the positives and the negatives.[02:]Neither fate nor decisions can be determined by other people in our own life.[02:]No one can change fate.[03:]We can control our thinking and therefore our decisions in life.[00:]Passage 15. Struggle for Freedom[00:]It is not possible for me to express all that I feel of appreciation [00:]for what has been said and given to me. [00:]I accept, for myself, with the conviction of having received [00:]far beyond what I have been able to give in my books. [00:]I can only hope that the many books which I have yet to write [00:]will be in some measure a worthier acknowledgment than I can make tonight.[00:]And, indeed, I can accept only in the same spirit [00:]in which I think this gift was originally given[00:]—that it is a prize not so much for what has been done, as for the future.[00:]Whatever I write in the future must, I think, [
