To begin with, reading books has greater effects than watching television because it provides an active way of learning while the latter is a passive one. Television takes away a great deal of the wonder of childhood. Reading a book, you have to fully engage your imagination. You have to connect the letters that you are reading to a full image, a whole world that you39。ve created on your own. Television hands that to you. Among the public in the developed countries, there is a rising concern about the indulging of children in TV programs, which would prevent to some extend the mental growth of children. Moreover, Reading a thoughtprovoking book — a fiction book or a nonfiction book — helps a person focus on the moment, achieving a form of mindfulness, and also, feel the pain and joy of others. There is a saying goes, the greater your capacity to feel the pain, the greater your capacity to love, which is key step towards creating a more harmonious and tolerant atmosphere in the society… . Books have existed as a medium of knowledge of the world for thousands of years, whereas television is only a modern invention existing for no more than half a century. We can find so many books in all fields of academic efforts: humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and so on， while the televisions… .. In today39。s fastpaced society, with overwhelming information and responsibilities， how can a person keep him/herself from getting lost let alone find peace within the world and within him/herself? One way is by getting lost in a good book.
