Her entire life is to take care of her children and do the housework. Besides, women were not financially independent. They must defend on their husbands economically. As for Carrie, a single and pure girl who was away from her relatives, she had no any advantages to help her to establish herself in such a society. However, Carrie is a girl who could not resist the temptation of a society in which materialist was the core and was eager to possess many things, such as beautiful wearing and high social status. All of the inequality including the status in marriage and education opportunity made it impossible for Carrie to get what she always desired to possess. In order to achieve her goal, she did something that was regarded as uhical actions. She became two men’s lover. Thus, she became a victim of the crucial social environment. Besides, the opportunity for women to get a job was slim in view of the social reality, because they were subordinated to men and were limited in a narrower environment. And we can get enough evident from this novel. Such as the description“when a girl leaves her home at eighteen, she does one of the two things. Either she falls into saving hands and bees better, or she rapidly assumes the cosmopolitan of virtue and bees worse. Of an intermediate balance, under the environments, there is no possibility. The city has its cunning wiles, no less than the 11 infinitely smaller and more human temper… Unrecognized for what they are, their beauty, like music, too often relaxes, then weakens, then perverts the simpler human perceptions. (Dreiser 8) what the author told us is that Carrie chose to be the latter. In other words, she chose to step into high society through an abnormal way. Carrie once wanted gain a happy life she dreamed, but she was be defeated by the social reality. Obviously, social reality affected Carrie’s character and then affected her destiny. The influence of two men whom Carrie meets When Carrie first stepped on the train to Chicago, she was just a girl who was full of innocence and ignorance. She was dreaming of a wonderful world she would step into while she didn’t know what she would get in the city which she had dreamed for a long time. But when she met Drouet whose behavior and appearance impressed her deeply on the train, she realized that how shabby her clothes were. Drouet’s fancy clothes and the luxurious life he was enjoying arising Carrie’s endless desire. He used his loquacious mouth to describe Chicago as a magnificent department of store which was full of luxurious goods. Besides, his wearing also served as an advertisement for Chicago. “His suit was of a striped and crossed pattern of brown wool, new at that time, but since bee familiar as a business suit. The low crotch of the vest revealed a stiff shirt bosom of white and pink stripes. From his coat sleeves protruded a pair of linen cuffs of the same pattern, fastened with large, gold plate buttons, set with the mon yellow agates known as “cat’seyes”. His figures bore several ringsone, the everduring heavy seal—and from his vest dangle a neat gold watch chain, from which was suspended the secret insignia of the Order of Elks. The whole suit was rather tightfitting, and was finished off with heavysoled tan shoes, highly polished, and the grey fedora hat.” (Dreiser 13) In conclusion, it is safe for us to say that Drouet was a stimulus to arise Carrie’s desire for material. When she arrived at Chicago, it was very difficult for her to find a job. 12 Finally she found one which she didn’t satisfy. But she knew that she had to do it in order to afford to pay her living expense. Sad to say, she was out of work because she was ill. Later, she met with Drouet the man she had met on the train. She received 20 dollars from him. She received it not because she could not live on but because she needed the money to buy beautiful clothes and shoes which she had been dreaming of. In other words, she received the money in order to satisfy her material desire. As the contact with Drouet, they lived together. As time went on, her desire swelled. “Drouet heightened her opinion on this and allied subjects in such a manner as to weaken her pore of resisting their influence. It is easy to do this when the thing opined is in the line of what we desire.” (Dreiser 125) When she realized that Drouet needs her, she began to seize this opportunity to win the favor of his. With the help of Drouet, she could buy practically every thing she wanted. But she was also very contradictory. There was an idea once appeared in her mind that the way she get the things she desired is immoral and she should give up those things which bought by using the money of Drouet. But under the influence of Drouet’s decoy and her desire, she eventually chose to accept current situation. She lost the sense of reason. Eventually, she shaped the character of following with the herd. Besides, Drouet also helped her to appear on the stage. With this opportunity, she found her acting talent. She realized that she had the ability to make enough money and step in to high status if she could be given opportunity. She has matured over the years of experience. Now, let’s turn to another man who has affected Carrie. Affected by her neighbor’s higher life standard, she became unsatisfied with her current situation. Her desire swelled again.
