【文章內(nèi)容簡(jiǎn)介】 tly but firmly, that I sit at the head of the table in our home. I realized then that I was head of the family, but I also felt unwilling to introduce such a change. How would I feel sitting in that head place in my Dad39。s presence? And how would he handle it? I was to find out on the occasion of our youngest child39。s first birthday. Mom and Dad arrived for lunch, and went into the dining room. Dad moved toward his usual seat in front of the window. Before he could get around the side of the table, I took a deep breath and said, Dad, this is going to be your place, next to Mom, on the side. He stopped, looked at me and then sat down. I felt sad, and angry at Barbara for pushing me to do this. It would have been easy to say, My mistake, Dad. Sit where you always sit, But I didn39。t. When he and Mom were seated, Barbara and I took our places. I don39。t know how Dad felt. I do know that, though removed from his usual place, he continued to share his best self with us, telling stories of his childhood and youth to the delight of his grandchildren. As I served the food, our lives experienced a change, which we continue to live with. It wasn39。t easy, but I sense that there is also something good in the change which has occurred. I am beginning to learn that honoring one39。s father is more than the question of which place to occupy at the dining table. It also means listening, wherever we sit and whatever positions we own, to the stories Dad longs to tell. We may then, during these magical moments, even be able to forget about whose chair is whose.(1)Why did Dad always sit in the big chair at the end of the table before he retired? the chair was large enough for him. sitting there he could see the trees and grass in the yard. it was the holy seat for the head of the family. the chair was fortable with arm rests.(2)What do we know from the second paragraph? writer39。s parents moved out because the house was too old. writer didn39。t want to hurt his father’s feelings. writer39。s wife was rude to his parents. writer didn39。t dare to refuse his wife39。s request.(3)Which of the following is true according to the passage? felt upset after being removed from his usual place. writer was satisfied with the new seating arrangement. continued to tell stories to cover his embarrassment. didn39。t appear to mind where he sat.(4)What does the writer intend to tell us? Dad is more than the question of dining seat. is not easy to go against parents39。 wishes. twice before you act. coin has two sides.【答案】 (1)C(2)B(3)D(4)A 【解析】【分析】本文是一篇記敘,通過講述作者和父親餐廳座位的變化告訴我們尊重父母并不在于餐廳的座位,而是快樂相處。 根據(jù)第一段中的“His chair was not just a place for him at table。 it was a place in which he was situated against the yard and the trees. It was the holy(神圣的)and protected place that was his, and ours through him.” 根據(jù)第二段中的“I realized then that I was head of the family, but I also felt unwilling to introduce such a change. How would I feel sitting in that head place in my Dad39。s presence? And how would he handle it?” 根據(jù)第三段中的“Before he could get around the side of the table, I took a deep breath and said, ‘Dad, this is going to be your place, next to Mom, on the side.’He stopped, looked at me and then sat removed from his usual place, he continued to share his best self with us, telling stories of his childhood and youth to the delight of his grandchildren.” 根據(jù)最后一段中的“I am beginning to learn that ‘honoring one39。s father’ is more than the question of which place to occupy at the dining table. It also means listening, wherever we sit and whatever positions we own, to the stories Dad longs to tell We may then, during these magical moments, even be able to forget about whose chair is whose.” 故選A。 A bite from a tsetse fly (采采蠅) is an extremely unpleasant experience. It is not like a mosquito, which can put its thin mouthpart directly into your blood, often without you noticing. In contrast, the tsetse fly39。s mouth has tiny saws on it that saw into your skin on its way to suck out your blood. To make matters worse, several species of tsetse fly can transmit diseases. One of the most dangerous is a parasite that causes "sleeping sickness", or "human African trypanosomiasis"to give it its official name. Without treatment, an infection is usually fatal. Like so many tropical diseases, sleeping sickness has often been neglected by medical researchers. However, researchers have long endeavored to understand how it avoids our bodies39。 defence mechanisms. Some of their insights could now help us eliminate sleeping sickness altogether. There are two closelyrelated singlecelled parasites that cause this deathly sleep: Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense. The latter is far more mon: it is responsible for up to 95% of cases, mostly in western Africa. It takes several years to kill a person, while T. brucei rhodesiense can cause death within months. There are still other forms that infect livestock. After the initial bite, sleeping sickness symptoms often start with a fever, headaches and aching muscles. As the illness goes on, those infected bee increasingly tired, which is where it gets its name. Personality changes, severe confusion and poor coordination can also happen. While medication does help, some treatments are toxic and can themselves be deadly, especially if they are given after the disease has reached the brain. It is worth noting that sleeping sickness is no longer as deadly as it once was. In the early 20th Century several hundred thousand people were infected each year. By the 1960s the disease was considered "under control" and had reached very low numbers, making its spread more difficult. But in the 1970s there was another major epidemic, which took 20 years to control. Since then, better screening programmes and earlier interventions have reduced the number of cases dramatically. In 2009 there were fewer than 10,000 cases for the first time since records began, and in 2015 t
