The only direct munication between husband and wife is when the wife asks the husband what their son means by Malabar, the husband answers stonily that he doesn?t know it. The husband, who is the master of the house in the home position, is not essential and needed by the other family members. The wife does not have any expectations to him and refers to the husband who has no luck repeatedly. He does not provide her the material condition, which is the deep reason of their relationship maintaining in the surface. When the money he earns cannot satisfy the needs of the family member and sustains the cost of the family, he still does not try to find a solution to solve these problems, and only keeps his past way of living. The obsession with wealth and material items is pitted against the responsibilities of parenting in The RockingHorse Winner. It is the responsibility of the husband to provide for the children in a family. It is also the responsibility of the husband to spend money wisely and budget carefully, so that the bills are paid and everyone lives a happy life without anxious about the shortage of money. However, in this short story, the husband is a plete failure at the financial dealings and his son Paul was incredibly gifts at making money, even by gambling. The husband in the story never really thinks about anything he can do to provide for the family. When his wife tries this thing and the other, but can not find anything successful, “She racked her brains, and tried this thing and the other, but could not find anything successful” (王守仁 2020： 183) the husband, whose main talents are having expensive tastes and being handsome, “seemed as if he would never be able to do anything worth doing.” (王守仁 2020： 183) never shows his worries about his children and burdens the responsibility of the whole family. The husband fails to fulfill his responsibilities, and can not afford to let Hester live the life she wants. Therefore, the husband does not have the ability to love her wife and fails to take the responsibility to take care of her. Conclusion In the background of modern industrial civilization, the loss of humanity and the indifference between people are revealed in The RockingHorse Winner. The love between mother and son, father and son, husband and wife are all abnormal under that circumstance. In The RockingHorse Winner, every person?s attitude and action is driven by money, and all of them bee a clown and makes themselves a tool of making money, and a slave of money. The relationship between family members is indifferent, which is not to exchange love and trust, but money. The husband is disabled, weak and hardhearted, and the wife is so disappointed that she lost her ability of love and only pursues the enjoyment of money all day. The woman cannot love her children and husband, and the man is disappearing all the time and never takes his responsibility as a father and a husband. While their son, Paul sacrifice his life in order to gain his mother?s love and satisfy her greedy need of money. All in all, it is actually Hester?s greedy which leads to the death of Paul. As Hester?s brother says, Hester gains eightyodd thousand, but kills her own son. She is the person who makes Paul die. Therefore, the RockingHorse Winner is a tragedy that a son?s death is because of his mother?s greedy and the sacrifice of capitalist society.
