The Sun Also Rise, Hemingway?s first novel, was published in 1926, with which he scored his first solid success. Hemingway married Pauline after he divorced Richardson in 1927. However this marriage was also unsuccessful and the couple divorced after Hemingway returned from the Spanish Civil War, where he had been a journalist, and after which he wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls, the harvest of his considerable experience of Spain in war and peace. He married his third wife Gellhorn in 1940. they separated when he met Welsh in London during The Second World War. Shortly after he published The Old Man and the Sea one of his masterpieces, in 1952, Hemingway went to Africa, where he was almost killed in a plane crash that left him in pain or illhealth for much of the rest of his life. Hemingway lived in Florida and Cuba during the 1930s and 1940s, but in 1959 he moved from Cuba to Ketchum, Idaho, where ended his life in the summer of 1961. 24.
