H ave you ever dream ed of pl ayi ng in front of thousands of peopl e at a concert, at whi ch everyone i s cl appi ng and appreci ati ng your m usi c? But just now do peopl e form a band? Many m usi ci ans m eet and form a band because they l ike to wri te and pl ay thei r own m usi m ay start as a group of hi ghschol students, for whom practi si ng their m usic i n som eone’s house i s the first step to fam e. Som etim es they m ay pl ay to passersby i n the stret or subway so that they can earn som e extra m oney for themsel ves or to pay for their i nstrum ents. Later they may gi ve perform ances i n pubs or cl ubs, for whi ch they are pai d i n cash. Of course they hope to make records i n a studi o and sel m il i ons of copi es to be e m il li onai res! H owever, there was one band that started i n a di ferent way. It was cal l ed the Monkees and began as a TV show. The m usi ci ans were to pl ay jokes on each other as wel l as pl ay m usi c, m ost of whi ch was based l oosel y on the Beatl es. The TV ani zer had pl anned to find four m usici ans who coul d act as wel as si ng. They put an adverti sem ent i n a newspaper l ooki ng for rock musi ci ans, but they coul d onl y find one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three m em bers of theband. As som e of these actors coul d not si ng wel l enough, they had to rel y on other m usi ci ans to help them . So duri ng the broadcasts they just pretended to si ng. Anyhow thei r perform ances were hum orous enough to be copi ed by other groups. They were so popul ar that thei r fans form ed clubs i n order to get m ore fam il i ar wi th them . Each week on TV, the Monkees woul d pl ay and si ng songs wri tten by other m usi ci ans. H owever, after a year or so i n whi ch they becam e m ore seri ous about thei r work, the Monkees started to pl ay and si ng their own songs l i ke a real band. Then they produced thei r own records and started touring and pl ayi ng thei r own m usi c. In the USA they becam e even m ore popular than the Beatl es and sol d even m ore records. The band broke up about 1970, but hapil y they reuni ted i n the m i d1980s. They produced a new record i n 1996, wi th whi ch they cel ebrated thei r form er ti m e as a real band. Freddy the frog（Ⅱ） Not l ong after Freddy and the band becam e fam ous, they vi si ted Bri tai n on a bri ef tour. Fans showed thei r devoti on by wai ti ng for hours to get ti ckets for thei r concerts . Freddy was now qui te confi dent when he went i nto a concert hal . He had to go to London, wear an expensive sui t and give a perform ance to a TV cam era. It fel t very strange. But as soon as the programm e was over, the tel ephones whi ch were i n the sam e room started ri ngi ng. Everybody was aski ng when they coul d see Freddy and hi s band agai n. They were trul y stars. Then thi ngs went wrong. Freddy and hi s band coul d not go out anywhere wi thout bei ng fol l owed. Even when they wore sungl ases or beards peopl e recogni zed them . Fans found them even when they went i nto toi l et. They tri ed to hi de i n the readi ng rooms of l i braries, but it was usel ess. Som eone was al ways there!
