It is the nature and responsible of the parents to love and take care of their children, but in The RockingHorse Winner, the father is mentioned few times in the story, so it is obvious that he does not love his children. In The RockingHorse Winner, the first time referred to Paul?s father is that the father has a small ine and not nearly enough for his family, “The mother had a small ine, and the father had a small ine, but not nearly enough for the social position which they had to keep up. The father went in to town to some office. But though he had good prospects, these prospects never materialized. There was always the grinding sense of the shortage of money, though the style was always kept up. ” (王守仁 2020： 183)and next, the father does not consider about the shortage of money in the family. From these two points, a coldhearted, disabled, and irresponsible father is formed. When Paul asks his mother why their family does not keep a car of their own, his mother says because Paul?s father has no luck. “?Mother,? said the boy Paul one day, ?why don?t we keep a car of our own? Why do we always use uncle?s, or else a taxi?? ?Because we?re the poor members of the family,? said the mother. ?But why are we, mother?? ?Well － I suppose,? she said slowly and bitterly, ?it?s because your father has no luck.?” (王守仁 2020： 184) It can be seen that the mother is so helpless because of his father?s disability. Paul?s father does not take responsibility to earn money and take care of the family, so he is a bad father. The only related words with his son is when his wife asks him who is Malabar their son often referred to, he said coldly, “I don?t know.” (王守仁 2020： 193) When his son was dying, he was in the downstairs modulating whiskey unexpectedly. “?She heard her husband downstairs, mixing a whiskyandsoda?” (王守仁 2020： 192). In the short story there are totally four times mentioned in the wording of the father. As a father, he not only does not find the secret of his son, but also never municate with his son directly, which makes Paul feel that he dose not have a father mentally. When his son is going to die and needs others? help, the father still shows no interest in it and does not appear all the way. So, as a father, the child?s guardian, he is pletely unqualified. 3. Fake and Alienated Love between Husband and Wife Married not for Love From the author?s narrative, it is known that Paul?s mother married for love, whereas the taste of her husband is always very high and extravagant in the text. Visibly early before marriage, he himself had a lot of wealth, even if it is just an empty shell, at least it is superficially true, which, therefore, attracts the young girl. Besides, her children are growing up, and they will have to go school. In every way, she feels that there must be more money. She wants to do something successful. But the fact proves to be failure. As time goes by, deep lines e into her face. She imputes this situation to her husband?s bad luck. Her unexpected marriage life is the source of her negative attitude towards life. She blames her husband for all of her problems. She never tries to find wrongs in herself and struggles to make a better life. She does not find greed in herself, and gets rid of her greed. Instead, she believes that her husband has bad luck and she has married to the unlucky man. So Hester always thinks that she bees an unlucky woman from a lucky girl after she gets married, which is all because of her husband?s bad luck. When Hester?s husband doesn?t have the ability to support the family and cannot provide her the money she needs, she is disappointed with him very much. The disabled husband cannot satisfy her vain and extravagant wife. That is to say, if there is no money, there is no love. Therefore, money bees the only bond between husband and wife. The shortage of money leads to the abnormal relationship with her husband. All their children can hear the silent scream and the pursuit of endless material. So, there is no love in the family and Hester and her husband do not love each other actually. Failed Responsibility The relationship between husband and wife should be affectionate and considerate, and husband should be the mainstay of economy and spirit.
