Thi s i s why I am wri ti ng to you from m y hospital bed wi th two broken l egs and a fragi l e head. I di d not wi n anythi ng at the O lym pi c after al l. I need the factory to build me two new legs and an even bigger head. Then I will be able to pete once more . Let’s hope foe greater success in the next O l ym pi cs! Unit 4 (1) H ow Dai sy l earned to hel p wi l dl ife Dai sy had al ways l onged to help endangered speci es of wi l dl i ne day she woke up and found a fl ying carpet by her bed. “Where do you want to go?”it asked. Daiasy responded immediately. “I’d like to see some endangered wildlife,”she said. “please take me to a distant land where I can find the animal that gave fur to make this sweater. ”At once the carpet flew away and took her to Tibet. There Daisy saw an antelope loking sad. It said,“We are being killed for the wool beneath our stomachs. Our fur is being used to make sweaters for people like you . As a reasult,we are now an endangered species. ”At that Daisy cried,“I’m sorry I didn’t know that. I wonder what is being done to help you. Flying carpet,please show me a place where there’s some wildlife protection. ” The flyi ng carpet travel l ed so fast that next minute they were in Zimbabwe. Daisy turned around and found that she was being watched by an elephant.“H ave you e to take my photo?”it asked. In relief Daisy burst into laughter. “Don’t laugh,”said the elephant,“We used to be an endangered speci es. Farm ers hunted us wi thout m ercy. They sai d we destroyed their farm s, and m oney from tourists onl y went to the l arge tour pani es. So the governm ent deci ded to hel p. They al owed tourists to hunt onl y a certai n num ber of anim als i f they pai d the farm ers. Now the farm ers are happy and our numbers are increasing. So god things are being done here to save local wildlife. ” Daisy smiled.“That’s good news. It shows the importance of wildlife protection,but I’d like to help as the WWF suggests.”The carpet Rose agai nst and alm ost at once they were i n a thi ck rai nforest. A m onkey Watched them as it rubbed itself.“What are you doing?”asked Daisy. “I’m protecting myself from mosquitoes,”it replied. “When I fi nd a m il i pede i nsect, I rub i t over my body. It contai ns a powerful drug whi ch affect m osqui toes. You shoul d pay more attenti on to the rai nforest where I l ive and appreciate how the ani m al s live together. No rainforest,no animals,no drugs. ” Daisy was amazed. “Flying carpet, pl ease take m e hom e so I can tel WWF and we can begi n producing this new drug. Monkey,please e and help,”The monkey agreed. The carpet flew home. As they landed,things begin to di sappear. Two mi nutes l ater everything had gonethe m onkey, too. So Dai sy was not abl e to m ake her new drug. But what an experi ence!She had learned so much!And there was always WWF …… (2)Anim al exti ncti on Many ani mal s have di sappeared duri ng the l ong history of the earth. The m ost fam ous of these ani m al s are di nosaurs. They li ved on the earth tens mi l i on of years ago,l ong before humans came i nto bei ng and thei r future seem ed secure at that ti m e. There were m any di fferent ki nds of di nosaur and a num ber of them used to li ve i n chi na. The eggs of twentyfive speci es have been found i n Xi xi a County, Nanyang,H enan provi nce. N ot l ong ago a rare new speci es of bi rdli ke di nosaur was di scovered i n Country, li aoni ng Provi nce. When sci enti sts i nspected the bones, they were surpri sed to fi nd that these di nosaurs coul d not onl y run li ke the others but al so cl im b trees. They l earned thi s from the way the bones were joined together. Di nosaurs di ed out suddenl y about 65mi li on years ago. Som e sci enti sts thi nk i t came after an unexpected i nci dent when a huge rock from space hi t the earth and put too m uch dust i nto the ai r. O thers thi nk the earth got too hot for the di nosaurs to li ve on any m obody knows for sure why and how di nosaur di sappeared from the earth i n such a short tim e. We know many other wi ld pl ants, ani mal s, i nsects and bi rds have di ed out m ore recentl y. Accordi ng to a UN report , som e 844 anim al s and plants have di sappeared i n the l ast 500 years. The dodo i s one of them. It li ved on the Isl and of Mauri ti us and was a very fri endl y anim al. Pl ease li sten to a story of the dodo and how i t disappeared from the earth. (3) The return of the m il u deer My nam e i s Li nhui. I li ke to tel stori es about peopl e who work together. What i s even better i s when countri es hel p each other and bui l d a good friendship. An excel ent exam pl e of thi s happened when Bri tai n and Chi na worked together to bri ng the Mi l u deer back to Chi na. The Mil u deer, a speci es with l arge horns, used to be m on in Chi na l ong ago. Li ke other deer they l ive together and eat grass and the soft parts of trees such as sm al l u deer were often hunted for food or sport in the past. The ,Mi ng and Qi ng dynasti es di d not protect them and m any were kil l ed. That i s how the Mil u deer di sapeared from Chi na. Lucki l y before al l of them were kil ed, som e were taken to Britai n to im prove the envi ronm ent of the beauti ful park whi ch bel onged to the Duke of e li ked them so m uch that he took them al l the way from Chi na to Bri tai n. The Mil u deer l i ked the cool , wet weather i n Engl and and thei r num ber i ncreased year by year. As a result, when i n 1985 the governm ent of Chi na wanted to rei ntroduce the M il u deer,the Duke of Bedford was happy to hel p. The fi rst deer cam e back to Chi na to the N anhai zi Mil u Park 20 kil ometers south of Beiji ng and the centre in Dafeng, Jingsu Provi nce.
