an an android football team . About once a year we are allowed to get together to play a game of football. I’m as big as a human . In fact ,I look like one the fotbalteam I’m a striker so I have to be able to run very fast .My puter chips hel p m e to mova and thi nk li ke a hum an . My fi rat footbal petiti on was i n Nagoya , Japan several years ago . Last year our team went to Seattl e , Washi ngton i n the won tsecong pl ace . Personal y , I thi nk the team that won fi rsy pl ace cheated . They had devel oped a new type of program just before the peti tion. So we ned to encourage our program er to i m prove our i ntel i gence are determi ned to create an even better system .In a way our programm et i s like our coach. She programs us with moves to use if a new sitation arises. In this way I can make up new moves using my “arti fi cal inteligence “. I would realy like to play against a human team,for I have been programmed to act just like them. After al,wi th the help of my electronic brain which never fets anything ,using my intelligence is what I’m all about! I won the siver m edal for m y perform ance . Thi s year I had the honour to be chosen agai n . I wanted to mm et robots from other countyi es and explore i des about our ower ,m y programm er fel il l the wek before we were goi ng to l eave . It was very painful for her and I fel t very fri ghtened. I no l onger fel t so confi dent that I woul d wi n. The day of the peti tion was rather coul d for my l egs and m y speci al oi l began to fteeze. I paused before I jumped from the starti ng pl ace on a li ttl e spaceshi p but then I began m y perform ance. At the correct m om ent I tri ed to open m y parachute but there was a probl em . It onl y opened a l i tl e . In stead of fl ying softly to earth I began to fal faster and faster so that I coul d not turn , di ve, ci rcl e or heart stoped beati ng as I l anded heavi l y on a m ountain covered wi th snow. This i s why I am writi ng to you from m y hospi tal bed wi th two broken l egs and a fragi l e head. I di d not wi n anythi ng at the O lym pi c after al l. I ned the factory to buil d m e two new l egs and an even bi ger head. Then I wi l be abl e to pete once m ore . Let’s hope foe greater succes in the next Olympics! Unit 4 (1) H ow Dai sy l earned to hel p wi l dli fe Daisy had al ways l onged to hel p endangered speci es of wi l dl ne day she woke up and found a fl yi ng carpet by her bed. “Where do you want to go?”it asked. Daiasy responded immediately. “I’d like to see some endangered wildlife,”she said. “please take me to a distant land where I can find the animal that gave fur to make this sweater. ”At once the carpet flew away and took her to Tibet. There Daisy saw an antelope loking sad. It said,“We are being killed for the wool beneath our stomachs. Our fur is being used to make sweaters for people like you . As a reasult,we are now an endangered species. ”At that Daisy cried,“I’m sorry I didn’t know that. I wonder what is being done to help you. Flying carpet,please show me a place where there’s some wildlife protection. ” The fl yi ng carpet travel led so fast that next m inute they were i n Zim babwe. Dai sy turned around and found that she was bei ng watched by an elephant. “H ave you e to take my photo?”it asked. In relief Daisy burst into laughter. “Don’t laugh,”said the elephant,“We used to be an endangered speci es. Farm ers hunted us wi thout m ercy. They said we destroyed thei r farm s, and m oney from touri sts onl y went to the l arge tour pani es. So the governm ent deci ded to hel p. They al lowed tourists to hunt onl y a certai n num ber of anim al s i f they pai d the farm ow the farm ers are happy and our num bers are i ncreasi ng. So good thi ngs are bei ng done here to save l ocal wi l dlife. ” Daisy smiled.“That’s good news. It shows the importance of wildlife protection,but I’d like to help as the WWF suggests.”The carpet Rose against and alm ost at once they were i n a thick rai nforest. A m onkey Watched them as it rubbed itself. “What are you doing?”asked Daisy. “I’m protecting myself from mosquitoes,”it replied. “When I find a m il i pede i nsect, I rub i t over m y body. It contai ns a powerful drug whi ch affect m osqui toes. You shoul d pay m ore atenti on to the rai nforest where I l i ve and appreci ate how the animals live rainforest,no animals,no drugs. ” Daisy was amazed. “Flying carpet, pl ease take m e hom e so I can tel WWF and we can begin producing this new drug. Monkey,please e and help,”The m onkey agreed. The carpet fl ew home. As they l anded, thi ngs begi n to di sappear. Two mi nutes l ater everythi ng had gone the m onkey,too. So Daisy was not able to make her new drug.
