ole, the work of translation of public signs still has many improvements to be made. 2. Literature Review The research of signs translation is a new area in the field of translation. In China, the ChineseEnglish translation of public signs started relatively later than abroad (ibid.: 52). According to ZhaoXiang, sign translation studies in China started in 1990s with a series of academic articles published on Chinese Translators Journal (ibid.). The early research claimed the importance of sign translation and pointed out the mistranslations in signs. A search on , the largest digital library in China shows, there are fewer papers on sign translation before 2021, only one paper each year from 2021 to 2021. However, an increasing number of papers have been published in different periodicals and journals since 2021, which demonstrates to some extent that the study of sign translation has been paid more attention. In a sense, the great breakthrough was made in 2021 when Chinese Translators Journal started a column especially for sign translation, arousing greater concerns about the topic. Another drive was the successful bid for the 2021 Olympic Games, which appealed more researchers to do their part to support the Games. Since then, a number of scholars have been continuously doing research on sign translation, providing a series of studies on signs translation and publishing articles mainly on journals. The correct and proper translation of public signs can show our good international image, bring great convenience to foreigners and give them much help during their stay in China.
