The system is maintained in a parking position while the thruster is firing (Figure 1 bottom), so that it does not interfere with the plasma plume. When the thruster stops firing, the Telemicroscopy system is moved in front of the thruster to perform the erosion measurement. Four led lights or a laser line beam illuminate the thruster during the image acquisition. This greatly reduces the risk of contamination and saves a considerable amount of time if multiple measurements are to be taken along an endurance test.
