Since t hen, Mr Wim penny has had it r ebuilt . He has had t he length of t he wings inc reased so t hat hey now measure 93 f eet almost as long as t hose of a Dakota. M any people have shown inter est in t his new and unus ual sport. But t hough air cyclists may lear n how t o fly over shor t dist ances, and may, event ualy, even get across t he Englis h Chanel, it is doubtf ul whet her they wil ever cycle acros t he Atlant ic. Lesson67 Volcanoes 火山 Haroun Tazieff t he Polish scientist , has pent his lf e time st udying active volcanoes and deep caves in al par t s of t he world. I n 1948, he went to lake Kivu in t he Congo t o observ e a new volcano which he lat er named Kitur o. Tazieff was able to set up his camp ver y close to t he volcano while it was er upt ing violently. Though he managed t o t ake a number of brilant photographs, he could not stay near t he volc ano f or ver y long. He noticed that a r iver of liquid r ock was ing t owards him. I t threatened t o sur ound him plet ely, but Tazieff managed t o escape just in t ime. He wait ed until he volcano became quiet and he was able t o ret ur n t wo days later. This t ime, he managed t o climb int o the m out h of Kit ur o so t hat he could take photogr aphs and measur e temper at ures. Tazieff has oft en r isked his lif e in t his way. Lesson64 The Channel Tunnel 海峽隧道 In l858, a French engineer, Aim e Thome de Gamond, ar rived in England wit h a plan f or a twentyone m ile t unnel acr oss the English Channel. He said t hat it would be posible to build a plat form in t he centr e of t he Channel. This plat form would serve as a por t and a railway station. The tunnel would be well ventilat ed if t al chimneys were built above sea level. I n 1860, a bet t er plan was put forwar d by an Englishman, Wilam Low. He suggest ed t hat a double r ailway t unnel should be built . This would solve the problem of vent ilat ion, for if a t r ain enter ed t his t unel, it would dr aw in f r esh air behind it . For tyt wo years later a t unel was actualy begun. I f, at t he t ime, t he Br itsh had not f ear ed invasion, it would have been plet ed. Recent ly, t here has again been gr eat interest in t he idea of aChannel Tunnel. If it is built , it wil connect Brit ain to Europe f or t he f ir st time in history.
