Heritage Protection: Not Discarding the Mankind’s Spirit China is a multiethnic nation, with 5,000 years of history and a splendid ancient civilization. This has endowed the country with extremely rich cultural heritage. In recent years, China has made great efforts on the protection of world heritage. Chinese people’s awareness of the value of heritage and its protection has been tremendously enhanced. However, in some scenic spots and historic sites, there still exist manmade pollution and damage, and excessive exploration, which call for immediate Professor Xie Ninggao, dean of World Heritage Research Center with Peking University, still takes pains to travel around scenic resorts and world heritage reserve, making various investigations. When this interview was conducted, he had just returned from a symposium held in Hunan Province concerning the world heritage declaration of China’s “Danxia Physiognomy”. Here, he expressed his viewpoint about the protection, management and exploitation of world heritage. Spiritual Function is the Primary Function of Scenic ResortsChina is endowed with diversified natural and cultural heritage. In regard of world natural legacy, We have Huanglong Scenic Area in Sichuan, Jiuzhaigou Scenic Spot in Sichuan, Wulingyuan Tourist Site in Hunan, Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan, China’s Giant Panda Habitat and South China Karst, etc.。 in terms of mixed natural and cultural heritage, we have Taishan Mountain in Shandong, Ermeishan Mountain, Anhui Huangshan Mountains Scenic Spot, Fujian Wuyishan Mountains Tourist Resort, etc. Professor Xie believes that, whatever kind of heritage, we should learn their true value before we can make proper use of them. With the presupposition of protection, we can then reconsider how to use them without destructive exploitation. It is said that the value of world heritage mainly lie in the scientific, aesthetic and historical cultural aspects. For example, Taishan Mountain used to be the place of enthronement and sac
