Tenor of discourse is the linguistic reflection of the personal relationships between speaker/writer and hearer/reader— called PERSONAL TENOR, and of what the user is trying to do with language for/to his or her addressee— called FUNCTIONAL TENOR. ? Personal tenor個人基調(diào) 人們之間關系的親密或正式程度 與語言表達的清晰度成反比 ? Functional tenor功能基調(diào) 反映語言在特定的情境所能實現(xiàn)的交際意圖，如傳授、勸說、告誡、訓導等。 ? 寫作可以是 “ 為閱讀而寫 ” (如小說、電話號碼簿等 ),也可以是 “ 為說而寫 ” (如小說中的對話或獨白 )。即興的講話非為 “ 會話 ” (conversing)和 “ 獨白 ” (monologue)。 ? Field of discourse is the linguistic reflection of the purposive role of the language user— the type of social activity the language user is engaged in doing in the situation in which the text has occurred. That is to say, the language the user uses will show what his/her language is about, what experience he/she is verbalizing, what is going on in the speech event.
