【正文】 she kept herself perfect only to make her bee the ideal woman in the men’s heart. In the patriarchal society, Pauline, who attracted all the men, was so poor. And her life was just a tragedy because all characterizations to her were the products of man power. Pauline was so fond of collecting old things. There are some ments saying that the reason for Pauline to be a devoted collector of beautiful and exotic things like her father is that she wanted to make herself bee one of her father’s collections. This shows that Pauline was controlled by her dead father and she wanted to be a precious art work to devote herself to her father and her sons who present the belief of all men. Because of this unhealthy psychology, the belief of Pauline was that women should use their beauty and glamour to attract men’s attention. If it was said that Pauline was taught to ―be seen‖ and her unhealthy psychology because of her father, then the two sons of Pauline and other men were the main incentive for Pauline to keep her character. And it was also one reason for Pauline’s Jocasta plex. 2. Unhappy Marriage In the novel, there were few descriptions about the marriage of Pauline. But in the last part, when Ciss knew the secret of Pauline, there is something about Pauline and her husband and her lover, some Italian who was the true father of Robert. According to Ciss’s description, her aunt Pauline is a strange woman. When Henry was a small boy, she has left her husband. She has no quarrel with him before Robert was born. Sometimes when she met with her husband, she was friendly but a little derisive. But she would give him some money sometimes. It is not because Pauline 12 did not love her husband any more, but her husband could not satisfy her standard of an ideal husband. Her marriage was just a tragedy, she did not love her husband and her husband even could not deserve her. So she was in love with another man who was real father of Robert. In her automatic speaking, she opened her heart and showed her strong love to that man. And when he was dead, she transferred her love to Robert, the son of her and him. Compared with this, if Pauline had a happy marriage, she would not love her own son Henry, and she would not love another man and give birth to Robert and finally love Robert after Henry’s death. So in other words, unhappy marriage was one of the reasons for Pauline’s Jocasta plex. C. The Influence of Jocasta Complex 1. Tragedy of Heroine Capered the life of Pauline before her secrete was brought to light and after that, the lovely lady almost changed from a beauty and charm into an old and ugly witch. There is a description, ―her aunt, in a dress of black lace over ivory colour, stood in the doorway. Her face was made up, but haggard with a look of unspeakable irritability, as if years of suppressed exasperation and dislike of her fellowmen had suddenly crumpled her into an old witch.‖12 For many years, Pauline had been struggling and suffering with Jocasta plex in her whole life. She played the role of a lovely and charming lady but not with her real heart. She hated life like this, but she had no courage to go out from it and finally relief herself. After her secrete was known by her niece Ciss, and after Ciss pretended to be Henry to scare her, she totally could not stand it. She became haggard and old just between one night and a day. She looked old, very old, just like a witch. Even her loved son Robert just fetched furtive glances at her. Not to say Ciss. Because of her Jocasta plex, she changed from a lovely lady to an old, ugly and crazy lady. 13 But the influence is not only this. Finally, Pauline won her relieves at a great cost of her own life. It is not difficult to see this is a tragedy. Pauline was found dead in her bed, having taken too much veronal. But did her death really free herself from Jocasta plex? Absolutely the answer is no. 2. Influence on Other Characters There is no question that Henry’s death was because of Pauline’s Jocasta plex. He was the first victim. Because of his mother’s prevention, he finally consumed away with grief, which caused his mother to make Robert bee the second victim. So to Robert, when he was a child after his brother’s death, he became the surrenal of Henry. Even in other people’s eyes like Ciss, he was thought that ―what would e be when his mother was dead?— in a dozen more years. He would be just a shell, the shell of a man who had never lived.‖13 He depended so much on his mother. He did not only depend on emotion to his mother, but on money, because his mother’s Jocasta plex seriously influenced his psychology and development. On the one hand, he was fascinated by his mother, which led that he could not have normal emotion to other girls. He was controlled by his mother deeply. On the other hand, he was so shamed of this emotion, and he thought that he was not a man in the presence of his mother. But he even could not run away from that strange circle. Finally, after Pauline was dead, she didn’t fet to give a hit back at her son and her niece. She left nothing to them but just a little money. The third victim was Ciss, at the beginning。 the queer curved eyebrows floated in such frail arched on her forehead, and then she came back to the real lovely lady again. It is not shown in this aspect, but to Pauline, they always had a wonderful time in the evening: And then! Oh, then, the lovely glowing intimacy of evening, between mother and son, when they deciphered manuscripts and discussed points, Pauline with that eagerness of a girl, for which she was famous. And it was quiet genuine. In some mysterious way she had saved up her power for being thrilled, in connexion with a man. Robert, solid, rather quiet and
