Lesson43 Over t he South Pol e 飛越南極 In 1929, three years af ter his f li ght over t he Nor th Pole, the Ameri can explor er , R. E. Byrd, succesful ly f lew over t he Sout h Pole f or the f ir st t ime. Though, at fi rst, Byr d and his men wer e able t o take a gr eat many photographs of the mountains t hat l ay bel ow, they soon r an int o ser ious t rouble. At one poi nt , i t seemed cer t ai n that their pl ane woul d crash. I t coul d only get over t he mount ains if i t rose to 10, 000 feet. Byrd at once ordered hi s men to thr ow out two heavy food sacks. The plane was then able t o r ise and it cleared t he mount ains by 400 f et. Byr d now kne w t hat he woul d be abl e t o reach the South Pol e which was 300 m il es away, for t her e were no more mount ai ns in si ght . It r ose out of the ba sket and began to fol low t he movements of the pi pe. We were ver y much sur pri sed when t he snake char mer suddenly began to pl ay jazz tunes and moder n pop songs.
