In this connection, the study of Woolfs thoughts of gender and gender differences in To the Lighthouse by analyzing the main characters and the social background in which the novel is set is of great necessity and of current significance and will fill the gaps in the researches in this fields. The Organization of the ThesisThe thesis is divided into four chapters. In Chapter One, as we have seen, a brief introduction is made to Virginia Woolf, her literary career and To the Lighthouse. This introduction aims to help us to have a better understanding of the themes and significance of her works, since her writings are closely associated with her personal experiences. This chapter also presents the aim of the present project, in the pany of critical responses to To the Lighthouse both abroad and in China. In Chapter Two, discussions about Woolf39。, and six focus on Woolfs narrative strategies, gender issues in and out of her novels, the feminine writing, etc. In other words, none of disco focuses on Woolfs thoughts of gender in To the Lighthouse. What?s more, as an indispenstep from Woolf thoughts of feminism to her androgynous vision，Woolf thoughts of gender differences have not been studied separately in domestic literary criticism. The research on Woolfs thoughts of feminism is important, to say the least. We should realize that Woolf thoughts of feminism are only about the social position of female and her understanding of female. In addition, Woolf thoughts of gender and gender differences are about the position of both male and female and her proposition of the future social position of different genders. However, there leaves much space to go deep into her thoughts of gender differences.On the other hand，Woolf androgynous vision has been paid lots of attention. There are several possible reasons: 1) the publication of Woolf5s Orlando is warmly weled among the public, in which Orlando is a representation of androgyny。s Biography was published, in which both her life and works are involved.The earliest research on Virginia Woolf was in 1937 when Jin Donglei made a brief ment on her in History of British Literature.
