Fol lowing Jane?s way of studying chimps,our group are al going to vi sit them in the has studi ed these famil ies of chi mps for m any years and helped people understand how much they behave li ke humans. Watching a famil yof chim ps waking up is our fi rst acti vi ty of the day. Thi s means goi ng back to the pl ace where we l eft the fami ly sl eepi ng i n a tree the ni ght before. Everybody si ts and waits i n the shade of the trees whi le the fami ly begi ns to wake up and move we fol ow as they wonder i nto the of the ti me,chi mps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love i n their fami ly. Jane worns us that our grou is goi ng tobe very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she i s ri ght. H owever, the eveni ng makes i t al worthwhil watch the m other chi mpand her babi es play in the we see them go to sl ep together i n their nest for the ni ght. We reali ze that the bond between mem bers of a chim p fami ly i s as strong as in a human fam ily. Nobody before Jane ful y understood chi mp spent years observing and recording thei r dail y activiti es. Since her ch i ldhood she had wanted to work wi th anim als i n their own environment. However,this was not easy. When she first arrived i n Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a wom an to l ive i n a forest. Onl y after her mother came to hel pher for the first few months was she al lowed to begi n her project. Her work changed the way peopl e think of exam ple,one important thi ng she di scovered was that chi mps hunt and eat m eat. Until then every thought chi mps only eat frui t and al so discovered how chi mps muni cate with each other,and her study of thei r body l anguage hel ped her work out their social system . For forty years Jane Goodal has beenoutspoken about maki ng the rest of the world understand and respect the li fe of these anim has argued that ani mals shoul d be left i n the wi ld and not used for entertainment or has helped to set up speci al pl aces where the can l ive safely. I enjyed Engl i sh ,bi ol ogy,and chemi stry at school, but whi ch one should I choose to study at universi ty ?i did not know the answer until one evening when I sat down at the puter to do some research on great women of China. By chance I came across an articl e about a doctor cal ed Lin Qiaozhi, a specalist in women?s lived from 1901 to 1983 .It seemed that she had been very busy in her chosen career , travl ing abored to study as wel l as writi ng books and arti ne of them caught m y eye. It was a sm al l book explai ni ng how to keepi ng babies cl ean,healthy and free from sicknes. Why did she write that?Who were the women that Lin Q iaozhi thought needed thi s advice?I l ooked careful y at the text and real ize that i t was i ntended for women i n the countryside. Perhaps i f they had an emergency they coul d not reach a doctor. Suddenly it hit me how difficult it was for a woman to get medical training ata that was a generation when girl s? educati on was al ways pl acred decond to boys?.Was she so much cleverer than anyone else?Further reading made m e real ize that it was hard work and determination as wel as her gentle nature that got her i nto medi cal school. What m ade her succeed later on was the kindness and considerati on she showed to al l her was story after story of how Lin Qiaozhi, tired after a day?s work,went late at night to del iver a baby for a pool famil y who could not pay her. By now I coul d not wai t to find out more about her . I di scovered that Li n Qi aozhi had devoted her whole l ife to herpatiens and had chosen not to have a fami ly of her she m ade sure that about 50, 000 babi es were safely del thi s tim e I was very exci ted.
