But unfortunately it is too late to realize it because Rhett, with a deeply broken heart, decides to leave her. Although Scarlett is at her wits? end for a while, she regains her fighting spirit. She makes up her mind to get him back. She believes that she can make it as long as she has determined to do. She will not and neither can she admit failure. Her fate and her happiness are in her own hands. Therefore in Scarlett?s subconsciousness, she has strong awareness of male conquest. 3. Pursuit of economic independence and selfactualization The famous British female writer Virginia Woolf has claimed in her celebrated book A Room of One’s Own that if a woman wants to write novels, she must have money and also a room of her own. Here both “money” and “room” are metaphors, indicating that women?s independence first lies in their economic independence. Only in this case can women achieve independent personality and no longer need to please men or keep to the values established by the patriarchal society. In Gone with the Wind, the hurricane of the Civil War oversweeps Scarlett?s world, taking her out from the “cozy nest” of Tara, her previous warm home which has nurtured her numerous golden dreams. After the war, the former black slaves have gone。 the lands have been ravaged。 the cotton has been burned, mother is dead。 father is mad。 two sisters are suffering from disease: these prise what the plantation has left. But Scarlett “the belle of the County, the sheltered pride of Tara” (Margaret Mitchell, 2021) who has never raised her hand even “to pick up her discarded stockings from the floor or to tie the laces of her slippers” (Margaret Mitchell, 2021), unwaveringly bears the burden of her family. During those hard days, Scarlett toils every day to feed the whole family. To protect all their scanty food, she even shoots a soldier who has the intention of robbery, takes away his horse and money, and quickly cleans her home without a trace. In Atlanta, she robs and marries her sister?s boyfriend so that she can raise the money for Tara?s taxes. Besides she even borrows money from Rhett to buy a lumber mill and decides to run it by herself rather than giving it to her husband. For the purpose of more profits, she employs prisoners with no wages, openly drives the carriage to do business in the city, and fiercely petes with her male petitors. By means of her intelligence, she defeats them and successfully wins not only money but also the independent personality and selfrealization. During the reconstruction of Tara, Scarlett gives her whole attention to money, bustling everywhere for the revitalization of her family, sometimes even deserting the morality. She transforms from a girl who only seeks a life of pleasure into a keen and wise householder, showing her distinguished ability in the construction and management of life and being a tough woman. Her courage, resolution, fortitude and actions make people have to admit that she has pletely achieved selfactualization. Her transformation is the token of the death of “southern ladies”, the awakening of women?s consciousness and their unremitting pursuit for selfrealization. B. Feminism in Ellen O?Hara If Scarlett can be defined as a representative who is full of rebellious thoughts, then her mother Ellen O?Hara is a foretype of those traditional southern women who are all wellbred girls, good wives, loving mothers and the backbone of southern civilization and social morality. The following part will analyze feminism in traditional female characters represented by Ellen O?Hara. 1. Pursuit of true love and free marriage Scarlett?s mother Ellen, a typical noble and elegant female character, is a faultless woman with selfless love. Although she abides by the traditional conventions, she is also a girl with flesh and blood, thought and love. When her love is against ethical codes, she also flares resistant sparks, showing her selfconsciousness. At the age of fifteen, Ellen irrevocably falls in love with her cousin Philip, a playboy.
