Subsequently realizing he can avoid feeding on humans, he mits himself to resisting his blood lust and to being a doctor. 10 As the backbone of the vampire family, Carlisle makes decisions and strategies when they meet danger or threats. In Twilight, the writer bestows Carlisle the ability to change others without hurting them. Carlisle theorizes that when a human is turned into a vampire, they will have an enhanced ability from their previous life. He believes he brings passion from his human life. Actually, it is Carlisle who creates “good vampire history”. Being a vampire, he does not suck human blood even in his earliest period。 instead, he works as a doctor and saves people’s lives. Under the leadship of Carlisle, the whole family feed on animals’ blood. They live harmoniously with human beings form age to age. A vampire as he is, Carlisle keeps noble qualities as human being is, and sticks firmly to humanitarianism moral code. Those personalities make the Cullens distinct from the traditional bloodthirsty demons in vampire literature. Alice Cullen Alice Cullen is the adopted daughter of Carlisle and Esme Cullen. As one endearing character in Twilight, Alice is kind, “enthusiastic” (Meyer 2021:286), and care for others. She is the biggest supporter of Edward and Bella’s being together. Alice to Edward is what a beloved sister to a brother. She is also the closest friend of Bella, the heroin, as well as a human girl in Twilight. Bella says when she meets Alice in the Cullen’, “I was also very pleased that she seemed to approve of me so entirely” (Meyer 2021:283). When Bella first meets Alice, she describes her as follows, “The short girl was pixielike, thin in the extreme, with small features. Her hair was a deep black, cropped short and pointing in every direction.” (Meyer 2021:16) Alice plays a dispensable role in Twilight as she has the ability to foresee the future, and this ability is revealed its significance when the heroin is in danger. “She sees things—things that might happen, things that are ing.” (Meyer 2021:253) But her ability is limited, because the future is always changing, she can only foresee once the decision is made. She’s most sensitive to nonhumans. “She always sees, for example, when another group of our kind is ing near. And any threat they may prose.” (Meyer 2021:253) Due to this, Alice helps Bella and the Cullen family at every critical time. She also has 11 the characteristic that modern girl possesses—she has a special taste towards fashion. At the end of the novel, Bella and Edward is going to the prom, Alice plays “hairdresser and cosmetician” (Meyer 2021:420), makes Bella like a beauty queen. And because of her lovely personality like that, Alice is a very vivid, na239。ve, humane and elfish girl in Twilight. Bad Vampires Bad vampires still are inclined to have all the evil traits of Bram Stoker39。s original Dracula. They kill their human beings and drink their blood to survive. There are many variations on the bad vampire traits, but the main feature is that bad vampires always sink their teeth into their victims and suck the blood from their bodies, and then leaving them dead. Different from the Cullens, they are indeed creatures to be feared by normal humans. The bad vampires are led by James, and other members include Victoria and Laurent. This section gives an analysis of James and Victoria. James Another innovation Stephenie Meyer makes in Twilight is that she classifies the vampires into two categories, and it may be called another highlight of this novel. The vampires oriented around Edward are good vampires, and the vampires centered on James are evil. His clan includes Victoria and Laurent, but Laurent leaves them when James decides to hunt Bella. They view human beings as preys and make a living on their blood. The major antagonist of Twilight, James is a merciless, sadistic “tracker”(Meyer 2021:334) vampire who hunts human beings or, in some cases, animals, for sport. Fellow coven member Laurent warns the Cullens: “Don’t underestimate James. He’s got a brilliant mind and unparalleled senses.”(Meyer 2021:349) He will never stop until he gets what he wants. Towards the end of Twilight, James is destroyed by Cullen brothers Emmett and Jasper after he lures Bella to an empty ballet studio and nearly kills her. Horror is a key feature in gothic novel. In Twilight, the scene that James tortures Bella is very impressive: (1) A crushing blow struck my chest—I felt myself flying backward, and then heard the crunch 12 as my head bashed into the mirrors. The glass buckled, some of the pieces shattering and splintering on the floor beside me. (2) He was over me at once, his foot stepping down hard on my leg. I heard the sickening snap before I felt it. But then I did feel it, and I couldn’t hold back my scream of agony. I twisted up to reach for my leg, and he was standing over me, smiling (Meyer 2021:392). That horrible process of James’ torturing Bella is depicted in details in a subtle way. And due to her perating painfeeling description, it gives readers an overwhelming hatred for the evil vampires, especially what James does to Bella. In the sharp contrast between Edward’s family and James’ coven, readers gain a profound fancy and fascination for Edward and his family. Victoria Victoria is a member of James’ coven who plays a small but essential role in Twilight. She assists James, her lover and coven leader, in hunting Bella. Her first appearance is described as a wo
