Uni t 2 A pi oneer for al l peopl e Al though he i s one of Chi na’s m ost famous scienti sts, Yuan Longpi ng consi ders him sel f a farm er, for he works the land to do his research. Indeed, hi s sunburnt face and arm s and hi s sli m, strong body are just li ke those of mil li ons of Chi nese farm ers, for whom he has struggl ed for the past fi ce decades. Dr Yuan Longping grows what i s cal ed super hybri d rice. In 1974, he becam e the first agri cul tural pioneer i n the worl d to grow Rick that has a hi gh output. This speci al strai n of Ri ck m akes it posi bl e to produce onethi rd m ore of the crop i n the sam e fi elds. Now more than 60% of the rice produced i n Chi na each year i s from this hybri d strai n. Born i nto a poor farmer’s famil y in 1930, Dr Yuan graduated from Southwest Agricul tural Col ege i n 1953. Si nce then, fi ndi ng ways to grow m ore ri ce has been hi s li fe goal. As a young man, he saw the great need for incresi ng the rice output. At that tim e, hunger was a di sturbi ng probl em i n m any parts of the countryside. Dr Yuan searched for a way to i ncrease ri ce harvests wi thout expanding the area of the fi el ds. In 1950, Chi nese farm ers coul d produce onl y fi fty mi li on tons of ri ce. In a recent harvest, however, nearly two hundred mi li on tons of ri ce was produced. These i ncreased harvests m ean that 22% of thwart world’s peopl e are fed from just 7% of the farml and i n Chi na. Dr Yuan is now ci rcul ating hi s knowl edge i n Indi a, Vietnam and m any other l es devel oped countries to i ncrease thei r ri ce harvests. Thanks to his research, farm ers are producing harvests twi ce as l arge as before. Dr Yuan i s qui te sati sfi ed wi th hi s l i fe. H owever, he doesn39。t care about bei ng fam ous. H e feels i t gi ves him l es freedom to do hi s research. He woul d rather keep tim e for hi s hobbi es. He enjoys l isteni ng to voli n musi c, pl aying m ahjong, swimmi ng and reading. Spendi ng m oney on him sel f or l eading a fortabl e li fe al so m eans very l ittl e to him . Indeed, he beli eves that a person with to m uch money has m ore rather than fewer troubl s. H e therefore gives mi l ions of Yuan to equi p others for their research i n agricul ture. Just dreami ng for thi ngs, however, costs nothing. Long ago Dr Yuan had a dream about rice plants as tal as shum. Each ear of ri ce was as bi g as an ear of corn and each grai n of ri ce was as huge as a peanut. Dr Yuan awoke from hi s dream wi th the hope of produci ng a ki nd of rice that coul d feed m ore peopl e. Now, m any years later, Dr Yuan has another dream: to export hi s ri ce so that i t can be grown around the gl boe. O ne dream is not al ways enough, especi al ly for a person who l oves and cares for hi s peopl e. Chemi cal or anic farmi ng? O ver the past hal f century, usi ng chem ical fertil izers has ve e very mon i n farmi ng. Many farm ers wel ed them as great way to stop crop disease and increase producti on. Recently, however, sci enti sts have been fi ndi ng that l ongterm use of these fertil zers can cause dam age to the l and and, even m ore dangerous, to people’s heal th. What are som e of the problem s caused by chem ical fertil izers? First, they dam age the l and by kil li ng the hel pful bacteria and pests as wel l as the harmful ones. Chemical s al so stay in the ground and underground water for a lonog time. Thi s affects crops and, therefore, animals and hum ans, since chemicals get insi de the crops and cannot just be washed of. These chemicals i n the food supl y bui ld up in peopl e’s bodies over time. Many of these chemi cals can lead to cancer or other il nesses. In addition, frui t, vegetables and other food grown with chemi cal ferti lizers usual ly grow too fast to be ful of much nutrition. They may look beauti ful, but insi de there is usual y more water than vitamins and mi nerals. With these discoveries, some farmers and many customers are beginning to turn to anic farmi ng. Organic farmi ng i s si mply farming wi thout using any chemical s. They focus on keeping thei r soi l rich and free of di sease. A healthy soil reduces di sease and 可行性研究報告編寫組 二〇一〇年六月 was a generation when girls’ education was always placred decond to boys’.
