I thi nk my l ong and active li fe m ust be due to the healthy l ife I li ve. This bri ngs m e to the real reason for m y l eter, my dear grandson. Your mother tel ls me that you started sm oki ng som e tim e ago and now you are fi ndi ng i t di ffi cult to give it up. Beli eve me, I know how easy i t i s to begi n smoki ng and how tough i t is to stop. You see, duri ng adol escence I also sm oked and becam e addicted to cigarettes. Fi rst, you can be e physi cal y addi cted to ni coti ne, which i s one of the hundreds of chemi cal s i n ci garettes. I beli eved I was happi er and more relaxed after havi ng a ci garete, so I began to thi nk that I could onl y feel good when I sm oked. I was addi cted in al three ways, so i t was very di fi cult to qui t. But I di d fi nal y m anage. When I was young, I didn’t know m uch about the harm ful effects of smoki ng. I di dn’t know, for exam pl e, that i t coul d do terri ble dam age to your heart and l ungs or that it was m ore difficul t for sm oki ng coupl es to bee pregnant. I certainly di dn’t know their babi es m ay have a smal er bi rth weight or even be abnorm al i n some way. N ei ther di d I know that m y ci garete sm oke coul d affect the health of knownsm okers. H owever, what I di d know was that m y gi rlfri end thought I sm el t terri bl e. She sai d m y breath and clothes sm el t, and that the ends of my fi ngers were turni ng yel ow. She tol d m e that she woul dn’t go out with m e agai n unl ess I stopped! I al so noti ced that I becam e breathless qui ckly, and that I wasn’t enjoying sport as m uch. When I was taken of the school footbal team because I was unfit, I knew i t was time to qui t sm oking. I am sendi ng you som e advice I found on the Inter. It i s not easy to stop sm oki ng, but mil li ons have m anaged to qui t and so can you. Here are a few suggestions. Prepare yoursel f. Deci de on a day to qui t. Don’t choose a day that you know is goi ng to be stressful, such as the day of an exam. Make a li st of al the benefi ts you wil get from stoppi ng sm oking.
