In general, people all over the world now greet each other by shaking hands, but the Japanese prefer to bow. None of these actions is either good or bad, however, studying it will help reduce misunderstanding between peoples and avoid the difficulties in munication. So much for these. Looking forward to your letter. Yours, Xiao Gang 錄音稿 (Text 1) W: Do you like my new Tshirt? M: It’s great. I bought one myself the other day. It’s got a pattern of black and white circles on it. W: I bought two — this one that I’m wearing and another one with some words across the front. (Text 2) M: We can deliver your order either in the morning or afternoon, but we can’t tell an exact time. W: Well, I’ll be at work all day and be home from work at 6:00. So, you’d better send it between 7:00 and 8:00. (Text 3) M: The cover design has e. W: Oh, what a shame … I thought there’d be more colors in it. M: I think it’s attractive. But send me back if you’re not happy. W: But I think my manager will like it. (Text 4) W: The normal price for the family holidays is $290 per week. M: Does that include all meals? W: Only breakfast and dinner, and you don’t have to pay for transport from the airport to the hotel. (Text 5) W: I think we should get a pet. What do you think? M: Dogs need a lot of looking after and I don’t like cats. W: I’ve always liked the idea of gold fish. They look nice. So, let’s keep fish. M: That’s OK. (Text 6) W: Royal Mount Hotel. How may I help you? M: Hello, I’d like to book a twin room, from the evening of the 19th to the 21st. And I’ll be leaving on the morning of the 22nd. W: OK, sir. M: What is the price then? W: For a twin room, I can give you a special price as it’s low season: $200 for each night. M: Great. Thank you. W: And how would you like to pay, sir? We accept cash, cheque or credit card. M: I’ll pay cash on arrival, if that’s OK. W: Of course, sir. (Text 7) W: Hello, and wele to Smith’s Gym. M: Hi there. I’d like to bee a member. W: Yes, of course. First, you just need to fill out a form. Here it is, sir. M: OK. Name … telephone number … address … Is that OK? W: OK, thanks. Now, we’ve got three membership types here — mon, which costs 163。 a month. Silver, which means you can use the gym at all times, and this is 163。. Or for just 163。5 more you can get a gold membership, which gives you free access to the tennis courts and all classes. M: For now I think I’ll just take the silver. (Text 8) W: Which sports are you doing on each day this year, Tom? M: On Monday, it’s swimming again. W: The same as last year — so on Tuesday will you have basketball? M: I can’t do it that day because we’ve got football that day. W: Oh. So what about Wednesday? M: I want to practice football with my friends but the teacher said I had to do volleyball. Oh, there is a new teacher to teach us baseball on Thursday. W: Ah, yes. That’s much more interesting. M: And on Friday I had to choose between tennis and basketball. All my classmates wanted to do basketball so I decided to do that because Dad can teach me tennis at the weekend. W: That’s right. (Text 9) M: Hi, Gina. This is Nelson. W: Hi, Nelson. How are you doing? M: I’m doing fine, thanks. Ivan said you need help with your website. W: Yes, I was wondering if we could meet and talk about it. M: Sure. When’s a good time for you? W: How about Monday evening? M: That’s not a good time for me. I’m picking up a friend at the airport. I could meet you for lunch, though. W: I can’t. I’m having lunch with a friend. Maybe Tuesday, oh wait, no, Tuesday won’t work either. I have to go to the dentist in the morning, and I’m having dinner with John, in the evening. How does your Wednesday look? M: Wednesday is out for me. I’m at a meeting the whole day. Do you have any free time on Thursday? W: I have a long day at work, and then I’m going shopping with Lynn in the evening. M: And Friday I’m busy the whole day. So do you work on Saturday? We may be able to meet in the afternoon. W: Sounds good. See you then. (Text 10) M: Hi, you’re listening to Talk Back, the show where you tell us what you think about Radio Western. I’m sure you’ve all heard we have a new boss here at Radio Western and she pays much attention to your views. And we’ll be speaking to a surprise guest who has sent a letter to us later in the show. I must start by saying a big “thank you” to Tony Marsons — judging from your letters, he did a great job of covering the show last week while I was away. Thanks Tony. And thanks for all the s asking about my holiday. I had a long, rather boring flight home late last night but I must say I had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and the locals we spoke to were really friendly. Shame about the weather, which was disappointing, but you can’t have everything I suppose. And the kids loved it, so everyone was happy. Anyway, on to the first of your letters … John from Leicester writes, “As the programs end with guests getting rushed and many questions going unanswered. Why don’t you offer some kind of aftershow online program where the guest can continue answering listeners’ questions?” I think that’s a good idea. We’ll certainly pass this one up to management. I’m sure a service like this would go down really well on our website.
