We allow past problems and future concerns to dominate our present moments, so much that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. All actions are to satisfy the inner desire. All bitterness es from the unsatisfied state. It is hard to discover the value of life. I think that the significance of life lies in Carrie’ endless pursuit. All the progress is based on a universal desire in the part of every organism to live beyond its ine. One of the keenest pleasures of desire remains in the wanting, not the satisfaction. Wilde said he felt sorry for those who never got their heart’s desire, but sorrier still for those who did. We should keep such a spirit to live in the present moment. And bear in mind “No pains, No gains.” In the multiplecultural world, everyone has different aims and means to achieve. But we should not strive for material blindly and at any costs. If the material aspect were fulfilled to some extend, it should not to be the first place in the life. We should explore our spiritual realm to make material aspect be in harmony with spiritual aspect. Everyone is the master of his own fortune. Life is raw material and we are artisans. We can sculpt our existence into something beautiful, or debase it into ugliness. It is in our hands. Now is the only time we have, and only time that we have any control over. Let the life be full of meaningful by self.5. ConclusionFor Carrie, life is a state of wanting, which keeps her hunting. She needs what she wants and prioritizes them. An inexperienced girl es to the prosperous city with beautiful illusions. But the picture is not optimistic. Carrie is miserable with cold and hunger, and loses her position because of illness. The reality makes her believe that it is a great bless if she possesses cloths, carriage and villa. For her, happiness equals wealth. Under such needs, Carrie swells up her material pursuit step by step. In order to achieve his goal, Carrie takes some abnormal means that are not worthwhile to call for. First, she betrays herself and leaves her sister’s home to bee Drouet’s mistress. Then she elopes with Hurstwood, but when the latter’s attraction fades gradually, she abandons him cruelly. Carrie succeeds in New York as a musical star. She immerses herself into the upper social class. She has wealth in abundance. Then she realizes that happiness is not identical with wealth. She feels lonely and void in spirit. She ponders what happiness is. Though Carrie has not found happiness she wants, she will keep pursuing. “Oh, Carrie, Carrie! Oh, blind strivings of the human heart! In your rockingchair, by your window, shall you dream such happiness as you may never feel.’’【17】 Many authors analyze Sister Carrie at different angles. Some ments on Dreiser’s literary concept from the philosophical angle. Some criticizes young people to seek material at all costs from the social moral angle. Some analyzes the image of rocking chair from the angle of the literary creation. This paper analyzes Carrie’s various needs based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. It wants to tell people that in modern society material supplies more and more abundantly, but we should never pursue it blindly and much importance should be attached to happiness and stability created by spirit.
