he place of “I”.(2)The differences of the ideas of ethics The ideas of ethics are a part of the social culture. The ethics monly practiced in China is Confucianism whose core is “benecolence”. It pays more attention to the emotion between persons. Under such a historical background with patriarchal family system as the core, people stretch the love and care in the family to outward and call others with the kinships statues although there is no real blood relationship or kinship between them. So the persons would greet warmly like family member when they meet. Because of that, people unknowingly treat each other like family relatives asking continuously about life in the conversation, usually with the topics such as, age, job, ine, whether married or not, etc., to display kindness and caring. In Chinese, this is the performance to make the relationships close, and to make friendly contact. In English, randomly asking personal privacy may make the other side disgusted and displeased as the result that they put the personal value in the highest position. Under such a domination of the ethics, English have a weak idea about the hierarchy and the concept of identity and they are seldom punctilious in personal munication. Even when acquaintances meet, no matter the high or low status of generation in the family, they are equal to greet each other with a Hello.English always express their view in an outspoken and frank way while Chinese think it’s abrupt and rude. English always misunderstand the “Chinese modesty” as pretentious, thinking it is just lack of confidence for Chinese to express the idea in a mild and indirect way. These are all caused by the differences of the ideas of ethics.(3)The differences of the ways of thinkingEnglish greetings such as “How are you?”, “How are things going with you?” have bee a phatic language when they meet each other in more cases and they are not really asking someone whether he or she is OK. In genera, you just need to answer “Fine, thank you!” Chinese like to greet with some private question such as “Have you eaten yet?”, “What are you busy with? ” and “Where are you going?” etc. Sometimes English like to say “Hi, Ann. How are you doing? You look nice. You have lost weigh”. The sentences “You look nice” and “You have lost weigh” are the pliment greetings. But for English, “You look nice” is a good sentence to make the listener happy while “You have lost weigh” would make the hearer feel uneasy and doubt whether he was sick. Although this sentence was sometimes used to greet but to some extent, it is the warning and reminding the listener that he should get more relaxation or pay more attention to the nutrition. The way of thinking in English is direct. They are used to speaking and writing directly and put the conversation’s topic and the writing’s main idea at the beginning. But Chinese was influenced by the thought of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. They put great importance to the understanding and the connection between things. The way of thinking in Chinese is characterized by consciousness, concreteness, and the thinking activity is to forward with a spiral circle. For example, Chinese people usually don39。t start the talk with their intentions or purpose (except urgent important things) in the call, and they always begin the talk with something showing care about each other. After a long phatic, they tell the real purpose at last. While English are used to mentioning the purpose at the beginning of a call and then talk about other things. Because of this difference, English feel very difficult to understand the Chinese talking, they think that Chinese talkings are too wordy, making simple things plicated, and sometimes are impolite. And the Chinese think English talkings are too direct, and sometimes are hard to accept or even considered to be rude. The Influence of the Different Expression Between Chinese and English on Politeness Because there are so many differences between Chinese and English, there are effects on munications between the English and Chinese. The influence can be stated in the following aspect.(1) The loss of the information The different expression between Chinese and English on politenessthat leads to the loss of information is often caused by the speaker transcending the literal meaning and implying an under meaning which maintain the culture elements. For example:① He is a professional.② She is a professionalThe sentences in English mean that “He is a boxer.” and “She is a prostitute.” But the Chinese can’t find the real meaning if we don’t have a prehension of “professional”.(2) The misunderstanding of the informationThe different expression between Chinese and English on politeness would make us misunderstand the meaning in conversation. For example, English like to say “You are a lucky dog.” to express the loving to the listener because they love dogs and they think dogs are good friends of people. But Chinese traditionally think there are derogatory senses in the sentences with dogs, they think that “You are a lucky dog.” express the slander and the hostile attitude.(3) The barriers of the munication The different expression between Chinese and English on politeness may lead to the barriers of the munication. For example,——Where can I get to the station?——Follow your nose.Chinese may think he is just joking when he asks the way to the station and someone answered like “Follow your nose.” We don’t know “Follow one’s nose” means going straight and not turning while English can easily understand the meaning.
