lation in The Thorn Birds. She got her rights to make her own choice. Unfortunately, her love story is not goes like what she wants. Feminist ideas reflected in Pearl and JustineIn these two novels, Pearl and Justine, as the signs of the modern feminism reflected outthought most of the stories show us how to survived in the bad situation and develop individual personality.Pearl is one of the plexes, mysterious and interesting character in The Scarlet Letter. She seems different from Hester. One may wonder why she acts so strangely and so differently than all the other characters. She had been sent as a blessing and as retribution to remind Hester of her fall from grace and to teach her way to heaven. She always reminds her mother she was a symbol of atonement. Pearl represents a special view to research the feminist consciousness in Hester. As a daughter of Hester, Pearl is much more impetuous and wild. The austere Puritan ways punish Hester through banishment from the munity and the church, simultaneously punishing Pearl in the process. Lacking any form of maternal guidance,Pearl’s pretty much does what she pleases。 her creativity leads her to have a happy childhood. However, she is upset about her banishment and resented the people in the town, whom she views as enemies. On the contrary,Meggie’s daughter Justine also acts differently from what Meggie did. Justine is outstanding by her independent personality。 she is smart, mean, and courageous. She acts without hesitation. Justine is the most individualistic woman. Compared with traditional woman images in The Thorn Birds, she was very outstanding. In Drogheda, neither Fiona nor Meggie has strong Catholic belief. Both seldom instilled Catholic beliefs in Justine. So Justine was totally out of the control of women’s morals emphasized in Catholicism. Traditionally, women should be shy, tender, docile and diligent. In addition, they had to take doing housework as a kind of virtue. Justine knew how to do housework and was able to do it well. But she was terribly fed up with daily chores. Moreover, Justine refused marriage but was free from asceticism. She scorned those housewives who took their children and husbands as their career. With no interest in being a wife, Justine regarded marriage as the curb of women’s freedom. She even never thought of having a baby. Though having boyfriends, she refused to be men’s subsidiary. So she took the priority in choosing partner. Justine never fawned on someone who had high social position. In the boarding school, she actively learned lots of things about the vivacity of life. Later she chose to be an actress as her career and lived outside by herself. All these experiences forged her to be a premature and experienced girl. Generally speaking, Justine was active to master her own fate and deserved what she got at last。 she is the only modern feminist image in The Thorn Birds. (Jianjun Wang, 2005)4. ConclusionBy analyzing the heroines in the two novels, we learn different attitudes towards life lead to various pursuits in life。 these pursuits result in deserved rewards eventually. In fact, everyone needs a “home of soul”, and everyone should pursue it. Citing the lessons from the novel The Scarlet Letter, it can be said that although Hester suffers enormously from the shame of her public disgrace and from the isolation of her punishment, in her mind she can never accept the Puritan interpretation of her sins, she retains her selfrespect and survives her punishment with dignity, grace. This is her way to show her great personality against male dominant society. Regarding lessons from the novel The Thorn Birds, we do appreciate Meggie whose self – confidence is sticking out through the whole story. Her bravery against the cruel circumstances encourages me from time to time. Now that women have noticed they must be on equal terms with men. However, in real life, women are still struggling for true equality with men. Despite Hester’s and Meggie’s and many others’ struggle, there is still a long way to the success of feminism which will be a dateless topic from generation to generation. ReferencesAS, Hornby.
