e now set up special smoking areas outside their main entrances. For those who would like to stop smoking, the university is also offering a free smoking cessation program. Task 3Announcement29NEW BUS PASSES FOR STUDENTSAs of September, all City University students will be able to purchase bus passes for $125 per semester. This is half the price of a regular pass. Considering that a parking permit is two hundred dollars and that the price of gas is so high, this is more economical. These bus passes can be used on any route throughout the city not just to and from the campus. Bus passes can be purchased at the Campus Center. A valid . must be shown at the time of purchase.LettersTask 3Letter1The school’s newspaper has published a letter to the editor from the student, stating his opinion on the proposed new dormitory. You will have 45 seconds to read the letter. Begin reading now.Why a New Dorm?I, for one, am disappointed with the college’s housing department. Their new plan to solve the shortage of rooms on campus by building a new, allfemale dorm is extremely wasteful. The proposed construction will cost huge amounts of money. Spending this sum seems especially unreasonable when we consider the fact that there actually are rooms available in the allmale halls. Allowing female students to live there would be much wiser choice for the college and for its students. It’s time our school got with the times.Sincerely,Dale Thorne, JuniorTask 3Letter2The school’s newspaper has published a letter to the editor from a professor responding to the security changes on campus. You will have 45 seconds to red the letter. Begin reading now.Is Security Worth the Wait?As a member of the faculty for over 15 years, I can honestly say that I’ve seen some monumental changes take place on this campus. Unfortunately, some of them have been mistakes. The new security policy is one of the worst changes, since it creates more problems that it fixes. Look at the lines for the cafeteria. Students have to line up to show their ID’s just to get in. It’s a waste of time and the students should be offended by the university’s actions.Sincerely,Bobby Anderson, Department of BiologyTask 3Letter3Now read a proposal from the school newspaper. Read the letter.PROPOSAL FOR THE COMPUTER LAB Dear Study Body,I think something should be done with the puter lab. I don’t have my own laptop so I have to do all my school works in the lab. Last time, it took me 2 hours pleting my 30minute homework. I propose making a sign up sheet so the students don’t have to wait for long. Also the available hours should be limited to one hour per student to provide equal and timely puter access for all students. I believe this policy would also relieve the problem of noisy students outside in the hall waiting for their turns to use the lab. Task 3Letter4Now read a passage about the new school policy.Recycling Center Will CloseDear Student CouncilI am writing this letter to let you know how much happy I am with the policy to stop the recycling service. Of course the mission of school recycling center was to provide the opportunity for faculty, staff and students to recycle on campus and to continually increase our collection effort to reduce the waste stream, but the results have been no big change over the center’s 10year effort. Only a few people participate in recycling, and the pain to reduce the waste on campus ended up with another landfill outside the campus. Instead of using the money on the paid staff, I think it was wise to cut off the service and save the money to use on the other facilities.Task 3Letter5The student body has received an from a student concerned about the changes in the university gyms’ membership policy. You will have 45 seconds to read the . Begin reading now. From: anicolet@To: List suppressedSubject: Protest our gyms openings to area residents!Next semester, the university plans to open its gym to local residents. For a small monthly fee, anyone residing in the country will be able to use the gyms whenever they want. But the university hasn’t stopped to consider how this will affect us, the tuitionpaying students. If anyone can get a membership, the gyms are going to be too crowded. As it is, we often have to wait to use machines. And with all this use, the equipment is going to wear out much faster. I encourage you to write to the Recreational Sports Office, and ask them to put their students first.Thank you,Amanda Nicolet
