Over tim e I have changed qui te a l ot. I began as a cal cul ati ng m achi ne in France i n 1642. Al though I was young I coul d sim pl i fy diffi cul t sum s. I devel oped very sl owl y and i t took nearl y two hundred years before I was bui lt as an analytical machine by Charles I was programmed by an operator who used cards wi th holes,I coul d ―thing‖logical y and produce an answer quicker than any that time it was considered a technological revolution and the start of my ―artifical intel igence‖. In 1936 my real father,Al an Turing, wrote a book about how I could be made to work as a ―universal machine‖to sol ve any difficul t mathematical probl then on,I grew rapidly both in size and in the 1940s I hd grownas l arge as a room , and I wonderes i f I woul d grow journey on March 18th , 2020 to find out about the presentday O lym pi c Gam es. H e i s now intervi ewi ng Li Yan, a vol unter for the 2020 Ol ym pi cs Gam es. P: My name i s Pausani as. I li ved i n what you cal ― Anci ent Greece‖ and I used to wri te about the Ol ym pi c Gam es a l ong tim e ago. P: H ow often do you hol d your Gam es? L: Every four years. There are two mai n sets of Games—the Wi nter and the Summ er O l ym pi cs, and both are hel d every four years on a regul ar basi s. The Wi nter Ol ym pi cs are usual ly hel d two years before the Summ er Gam es. O nl y athl etes who have reached the agreed standard for thei r event wil l be admi tted as petitors. They m ay e from anywhere in the worl d. P: Wi nter Gam es? H ow can the runners enjoy peti ng i n wi nter? And what about the horses? L: O h no! There are no runni ng races or horse ri di ng events. Instead there are peti ti ons li ke ski i ng and i ce skati ng whi ch need snow and i ce. That’s why they’re cal ed the Wi nter O l ym pi cs. It’s in the Sum m er O l ym pi cs that you have the runni ng races, together wi th swimm ing, sai li ng and al l the team sports. P: I see. P: That’s sounds very expansi ve. Does anyone want to host the O l ym pi c Gam es? L: As a m atter of fact, every country wants the opportuni ty. It’s a great responsi bi li ty but also a great honour to be chosen. There’s as m uch peti tions am ong countri es to host the O lym pi cs as to wi n Ol ym pi c m edals. The 2020 Ol ym pics wi l be hel d i n Bei ji ng. P: O h yes! You m ust be very proud. L: Certai nl y. And after that the 2020 Ol ym pics wi l be hel d i n London.
