【正文】 What’s more, Dobbin had no idea of bad thoughts when his friend Osborne was still alive, he just hoped piously that Amelia, his love, could have spiritual happiness and abundance of material. Until when Osborne had been dead for a long time, and Amelia just continued to trample his kindness and dignity, did Dobbin e to his senses that Amelia was so selfish that only knew how to obtain, regardless of returning something. From Thackeray’s point of view, Dobbin was a guy different from other selfish people who lived in capital society. Although Dobbin married with Amelia as he 10 hoped eighteen years ago, he had reached forty. Thackeray arranged their marriage and the birth of their daughter, so Dobbin treated his daughter extremely carefully. We may feel pleased with Dobbin’s destiny at last, but this arrangement seemed to be unobtrusive and unreal. After all, Amelia was still cowardice and folly so we may think that she did not deserve Dobbin’s love. Dobbin should marry a better lady that matches with him. 3. Analysis of different values in different classes The values refer to a person’s general evaluation and views of the importance of the meaning of the objective things around, such as people, events and objects. On one hand, it performs like the orientation of value and the pursuit of value, condensing as a value target. On the other hand, it performs like a measure and norms of value, being people’s evaluation criteria of judging whether one thing has value or not. Women’s value in capital society The value of life is a special kind of value, the value of women who lived in the capital society is decided by the role and significance of their social and personal practice. What kind of purpose of life will they choose? What kind of road of life will they take? How to deal with series of contradictions between person and society, reality and ideal, pay and harvest, body and heart, and life and death? Wome n in capital society always didn’t have their own choice. Take Rebecca as an example. She was born in a low background of status, so that her life was marked the stigma of inequality from the outset. She tried her best to tease Amelia’s brother. She married Rawdon secretly without telling the Crawleys. She entered the palace to meet the king with the introduction of Rawdon’s brother. She flirted with Lord Steyne and Amelia’s husband Osborne. The environment of birth formed her with the value that she had to climb to the upper class deliberately. 11 What a pity, she failed because of her tragic fate. Another woman Amelia’s value was different from Rebecca’s because they have different living environment. Amelia was born in family in upper class, so she had a fortable childhood and would get every thing she wanted. Besides, she need not worry about her future. She was kind and innocent, tender and honesty, she was weak and inpetent, receiving the mercy of the men willingly. She was lack of courageous spirit of fighting against the misery and misfortune in life, just accepted them and doing nothing. These values were also decided by the environment which she was born. Parasite people’s value in capital society There were many parasite people living in the capital society, they were selfish, vain and profligate spender. The way and the attitude which people choose to deal with the various problem they encounter in the practice of life, is influenced by their own ways of life. Their values of life, have an important position in the whole outlook of the life system, and have impact, constrain and guide on a deeper level of people’s practice. Gee Osborne was a typical example in Vanity Fair. Osborne was born in a noble family which had prominent position in British society during Victorian period. He knew that he would inherit a large amount of money from his old father, so he often went gambling, drinking or going to the theater even after he got married. He just relied on the background of his family, never thought about fighting by his own. He just knew how to make himself feel enjoyable, regardless of thinking about others’ feelings. So in a nutshell, the environment of birth that shapes Osborne’s values of life. Other people’s value in capital society At certain historical stage of development in any society, there will form a 12 system of values which fits for the systems and requirements at present. This system of values embodies the nature and direction of the social consciousness. It not only acts on every impacts of economy, politics, culture and social life, but also has a profound effect on the formation of people’s values. In the capital society, there were a small number of people like Dobbin that still have a pure heart. Even though Dobbin39。s father was a figmerchant and belonged to the upper class but he became independently wealthy by his own hand. He defended Gee and was blind to his faults several times although he tried to force Gee to do the right thing. He pushed Gee to keep his promise to marry Amelia even though Dobbin was in love with Amelia himself. Compared with other characters, Dobbin seemed to be a hero, basing on his moral qualities and considerate action. But he was selfish in his constant thinking of Amelia. Any way, Dobbin’s values were also influenced by the living environment. 4. The influence of environment on values in Vanity Fair The values represent a series of basic beliefs and people’s judgment of objects around. Things like freedom and happiness, goal of business, the value of life, mission of pany, prize, glory and selfesteem, honesty and obedience, people always have their own judgment in mind. These arrangement and standards constitute a person’s value system. Value system determines our attitude and desire of things, and this is the psychological basis of all our behavior, it is very important. A very important reason of many people’s psychological problems is that he has no pass of values, as if the missing of a beacon in our heart, so we are not clear that how to move forward. The social influence on the formation of values As have mentioned in chapter three, the development of values of major characters in Vanity Fair are all influenced by the environment that they lived in. 13 Once personal values established, they are relatively stable. So in this chapter, further and detailed exp
