led. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children39。s books printed in the target language. At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, lout then I realised that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarise our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK. I managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. As a result, you can work out some of the definitions of words with your prior knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this method did not work well for me. The method I would remend is to read a chapter of your chosen children39。s book and at the end of that chapter, highlight the words you do not know and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before you use a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can get merely from the context of the sentence in the story. Additionally, a lot of children39。s books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or to whom the passage is referring.(1)Why was the author advised to read children39。s books? A.Because she was weak in reading great works.B.Because she was slow to learn language.C.Because she liked children39。s literature.D.Because she couldn39。t remember any words.(2)What can kids get from children39。s books according to the passage? A.Vocabulary and listening skills.B.Learning methods.C.Words and structures.D.Designing skills.(3)What causes the author feel surprised while reading children39。s books? A.Grasping the context from the pictures.B.Looking up the definitions of words from a dictionary.C.Getting familiar with the plots of the story.D.Understanding the words simply from the context.(4)What can be the best title of the passage? A.Reading Children39。s BooksB.The Way of Learning LanguagesC.The Method of Using DictionaryD.My Good Reading Habits【答案】 (1)A(2)C(3)D(4)A 【解析】【分析】本文是一篇記敘文,作者在學德語,因為看不懂文學作品,開始看德語兒童書籍,得到了意外的驚喜。 (1)考查細節(jié)理解。根據(jù)第一段中的“ I found that I could understand and learn individual words easily, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children39。s books printed in the target language.”可知作者只能理解單個的字詞,理解不了文學作品,所以她的導師建議她看一些用目標語言寫的兒童書。故選A。 (2)考查細節(jié)理解。根據(jù)第二段中的“As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarise our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures”可知兒童在看兒童書時可以熟知其中的詞匯和寫作結(jié)構(gòu),故選C。 (3)考查推理判斷。根據(jù)最后一段中的“If you can wait a bit before you use a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can get merely from the context of the sentence in the story.” Back in 1988, I was working at the University of Bonn in Germany as a research fellow. I took some time off in early May to visit a friend, who was the director of a museum in Viterbo, in central Italy. I set out by train, which crossed the Swiss border to reach Zurich, winding through valleys and along hillsides, and entering tunnels and making its way through the Swiss Alps. The scenery was so beautiful. The train then crossed the Italian border before passing through Milan and Florence, then finally stopping in Rome. I was lucky, as my hotel was close to the railway station. The next morning, I had a coffee at a nearby caf233。 and eagerly set out to visit as many of the famous Roman landmarks as possible. The following day I headed back to the train station, intending to take a short train ride to Viterbo to meet up with my friend. When I arrived at the station and attempted to locate the correct platform, I quickly realized that the station was closed for an upgrade (升級). For a moment my mind went blank and did not know what to do. My biggest problem was my luggage—my suitcase and hand luggage were so heavy that I couldn39。t move about easily. As I don39。t speak Italian, I could not ask anyone for instructions. I dragged my suitcase about 100 meters to a nearby motor mechanics. A tall, strong man of about 50 years of age was working there and I excused myself and asked where the nearest station was. I am sure that he did not understand me properly but he could easily guess that I was looking for a station. He replied, but I did not understand. He smiled, wiped his hands and said something, which I guessed to mean e along. So I dragged my suitcase along and followed him. He opened the door of his car, motioned to me to get in and then drove for a few minutes to the next station. I got out, unloaded my luggage, then shook his hand with thanks. He smiled back and drove away. There was no time to hug or exchange names I understood he was busy and in the middle of his work. I was moved so much by his generosity that I have never forgotten him.(1)In 1988, the author went to central Italy to .
