Built in 1885, it was the oldest car taking part. 1)Benz，奔馳車。 2)Built in 1885是過去分詞短語，作為伴隨狀語。 3)taking part用作car的定語，其完整原形為that took part?！ fter a great many loud explosions, the race began. 1)a great many，許多、大量。與a great deal of只能用來修飾不可數(shù)名詞不同的是，a great many只能用來修飾可數(shù)名詞。 2)explosion，爆炸。源自動詞explode。 Many of the cars broke down on the course and some drivers spent more time under their cars than in them! 1)break down，拋錨。 2)on the course，在賽道上。 3)注意體會本句話中的幽默筆觸：一些司機(jī)選手花了更多的時間躺著車底下，而不是坐在車?yán)锩妫馑际擒囎訅牧?，得躺到車底去修車。注意under和in要重讀，以突出前后對比效果?！ few cars, however, pleted the race.
