【正文】 6) 7 3 Image in Mao Zedong’s Poetry Mao’s poems are expressions of the decades of struggle, of the hope for a new China. In some way, we can say that his poems are war poems. Historical or political events hover around many of Mao’s poems. His poems are simply very beautiful and exultant, each line possessing natural ease, strong and clear. He uses the concrete images of poetry to give the history of modern China. Features of Images in Mao Zedong’s Poetry A Chinese writer once said: “Style is gradually formed in the writer’s creation practice. It is embodied in unique art form and can be reflected in all his works.”(Liu 98) Through a writer’s style we can know his writing character and his aim of writing. It is the marks of a mature writer. If a writer already formed their own style, we can tell the difference between his works and others. Style is a way to decided if one author is mature or not. A mature writer’s style can be seen from all his works and all specific images. Furthermore, we can also tell a writer’s difference style from the rhyme, words, rhetoric and passage structure. Analysis language can help us to know the writer’s writing style. Poetry as a language art mainly uses skill and technique to attract reader’s attention. Thus poets are all good at select words. In creation, they both obey the language rules and break the rules. Obey the rules is to clearly convey the meaning, while break the rules is to use the word in a creative way. Poetic license is use to say the writer’s creation use of language. Both Chinese and western scholar believe that poetry is not about what to say but about how to say and that emphasis the importance of poetry form. The beauty of poet language is one of the most important parts to form artistic conception. If translator ignore the beauty of poetry language, he would also lose the truly beauty of poetry. Before we analysis Mao Zedong’s poetry translation, we need to know his writing features first. After long time studying and analyzing, we can summarize some 8 basic features of Mao Zedong’s poem. Because he is a successful politic leader, most of his poetry is related to politic. Between lines we can see intense emotion about nation’s revolution and great passion of nation’s victories. He uses many numbers to show his passion and vigor. Many splendid images can also used to describe his love of the beautiful country. Numbers like “ 萬” “億”“千” give people a grand and magnificent feeling. Splendid images like “山”“?!薄疤臁薄叭铡薄霸隆薄暗亍薄斑|闊”“蒼?!?are all to represent the tremendous love of the country. These images mark the special character of Mao’s poem. (Xu 1993) Another important feature is many traditional allusions are used to indicate the problem he faced in his time. For people who don’t understand these allusion would hard to know the deep meaning of the poetry. Most of Mao’s poems are classical poetry, while the content of the poem are describing modern things. Mao Zedong’s poetry often uses popular and easytounderstand language. One good example is “天生一個仙人洞,無限風光在險峰” translated as “The Fairy Cave’s a wonder wrought by Nature’s land。 “molehills” is not so faithful as “mud pills” but it is far more beautiful in sense and in sound and better matched with “rills”. In order to reach the stage of beauty in sense, some translation method should be used to translate the image. We set Mao’s poem Spiral Mountain as an example to show the translation methods Xu applied in his version and the image beauty he conveyed. 清平樂 六盤山 一九三五年十月 天高云淡, 望斷南飛雁。 六盤山上高峰, 紅 旗漫卷西風。 The sunken sun blooddyed.” , we can see that the poet only use eleven words to show the grandeur and power.(Xu 1993) In the original poem the author use three lines to describe the vision and he use end rhyme, so in translation version translator use “strides, tide dyed” three words which contend the same end rhyme. The short sentence expresses the strong power and the end rhyme keep the poetry form. Classification of Images in Mao Zedong’s Poetry The unique style of Mao Zedong’s poetry is vigorous, romantic and powerful. 9 The poet always takes advantage of a scene to express his emotions, as well as a hero to convey his lofty ambitions. His works are always the interpretations of persistent pursuit and firm faith toward an ideal world. Even in extremely difficult days, he worked on his utmost to strive and never lost faith in his lofty ideal and thus created his own world full of images in words. According to the state of being of image discussed above, the image in Mao Zedong’s poetry can be divided into two parts: static images and dynamic images. Static Images Image can be static or dynamic. Static images refer to those which are motionless and often caused by nouns. In Mao Zedong’s poetry, nouns as “山”、“水”、“天”etc. Occupy prominent positions and pose a particular set of static image. Mao uses a series of images of towering mountains, including those in general and specific ones, to depict the cohesion and flow of force. For example, “青山”、“關(guān)山”、“萬山”、“高山” or briefly“山” are in general, whereas “莫干山”、“五云山”、“六盤山” are specific. What’s more, Mao Zedong is fond of the image of water. Take “洞庭湘水漲連天”、“到中流擊水”、“四海翻騰云水怒”、“寥廓江天萬里霜”、“五嶺逶迤騰細浪” for instance, “水 ”、“海”、“江”、“浪” are vivid images of water in his poetry. In Mao Zedong’s poetry, static images that are mainly presented by nouns concern an important aspect of its beauty. But while translating them ,there is a large space for the translators’ selections, which will lead to create different images in the
