UK and France attracted nearly 50 per cent of projects. The majority of life science projects were manufacturing projects. Ireland, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Austria received less significant numbers. New investments through expansions and colocations are being important contributors to the overall investment level in regions and countries. Within the life science sector 43 per cent of investment projects involved some form of expansion of an existing activity. 57 per cent were green field investment projects. Following years of decline, investment activity in Europe is now increasing as measured by the number of investment projects located in European city regions and countries. ? The total number of projects located in Europe in 2020 was 1,933, an increase of 5 per cent from 2020 where 1,838 projects where located in Europe. The level of investment activity is now higher than in 2020, but still lower than the boom year 2020 with 2,234 projects. ? The large countries (UK and France ) still attract the largest number of projects, except for Germany, but projects are located in a broad range of locations in these countries. The popularity of London (with 112 projects) and Paris (with 49 projects) as investment locations is declining. Contrary to the trend in recent years the new locations in Eastern and Central Europe and the Baltic states have not been able to claim an increasing share of projects in 2020. ? Expansions have bee an important source of investment. Within life science 43 per cent of investments in Europe in 2020 involved expansion of existing facilities while green field investments accounted for 57 per cent. ? Scandinavia increased its “market share” of investment projects in Europe slightly to 7 per cent mainly through increases in investments in Copenhagen (34 projects) and the 216。 Young’s EIM Online database. The database registers investment projects – either green field, colocation or expansions projects by foreign firms in European cityregions within all economic sectors, except retail. See appendix for further details on the database, definitions and methodology used. ? The Regional Investment Benchmark Analysis is one of the outputs from the Copenhagen Monitor project a project run by Copenhagen Capacity with the view to monitor the investment market in the region as well as internationally and identify trends that might affect future investments in Copenhagen. ?
