【正文】 to a society that have existed for many years, these must be transmitted from one generation to another”. (Brislin, 1993)3) Culture is based on symbols“A symbol is anything that carries a particular meaning recognized by people who share cultures” said by Macionis (Samovar and Porter, 2004).The symbols take a variety of forms: spoken words, written words, nonverbal actions and material things. The portability of symbols allows us to package and store them as well as transmit them from person to person and from generation to generation.4) Culture is integrated Culture is posed of parts that are related to each other and functions as an integrated system. As Hall said, “You touch a culture in one place and everything else is affected”. (Hall, 1977) Culture and Communication Communication is culture, and culture is munication. The study of munication cannot be divorced from the study of culture, and the study of culture will be onesided without the concerning of munication. Culture and munication cannot be separated. The relation between culture and munication can be elaborated as follows:Communication is a social and cultural behavior. When cultures differ, munication practices also differ. Both of them are symbolic systems. The difference is that munication is the encoding system of culture. It is the most important system for culture to be transmitted and stored. To sum up, culture has a close relationship with its people’s municative behavior, process, ways, styles, strategies and pragmatic rules. They depend on each other and have influence on each other.According to Hu Zhuanglin, “Language is defined as a system of arbitrary vocal symbols used for human munication”. (Hu Zhuanglin, 1987) It would then be true by definition that language and munication are inextricably linked. Language is the means for transmitting information in social munication. Communication is the most basic and important function of language.Language is considered to be a system of municating with other people using sounds, symbols and words in expressing a meaning, idea or thought. This language can be used in many forms, primarily through oral and written munications as well as using expressions through body language.Language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols used for human munication. It is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it. In the broadest sense, language is the symbolic representation of a people, and it prises his historical and cultural backgrounds as well as his approach to life and his ways of living and thinking. Language, too, provides the social bonding and predictability because humans have rules for language and these rules lead us to municate more efficiently and effectively. It has often been said prescriptively, if you want to learn the heart of the people, you must learn the language. We say this because language helps us understand how to “think” in a particular culture.Primarily there is a distinction between one language and another。 instead, it’s a form of English which reflects certain social functions and is applied to the business contexts. In other words, it’s a standard form of English which involves all kinds of business activities and which is fit for mercial needs. Jones amp。 and the ability to transmit the above to succeeding generations”.Intercultural munication study was first introduced into China in the 1980s by some English teachers and has made remarkable progress over the years. During the past few years, the relevance of intercultural munication studies to English language teaching in China is being more important. Now it is obvious that the development of intercultural munication petence has bee an indispensable part of business English learning.Chapter TwoINTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION COMPETENCEOver the past few decades, the discussion carried on in Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) has been focused on linguistic petence and municative petence. The subject of intercultural munication has been of interest to munication scholars since the 1960s. As the intercultural municative approach in FLT is gaining increasing popularity, more and more researchers and scholars have begun to concern themselves with learners’ ICC rather than linguistic petence and municative petence. So this part will first make a review of linguistic petence and municative petence, and at last introduce the connotation and ponents of ICC. The Connotations of ICCEver since the 1950s when intercultural munication became an independent discipline, there have been various explanations to the connotations and definitions of ICC. The definition of ICC has been explored from many different perspectives. Among theories which are constructive to the theoretic development of ICC, Yong Yun Kim’s ICC theory is more clear and prehensive, which the author utilizes as the theoretical base for this thesis.Yong Yun Kim, a prestigious scholar in the field of intercultural munication petence, wrote a book named Being InterculturalAn Integrative Theory of Communication and Crosscultural Adaptation in 2001. In this book, Kim improves and reelaborates ICC theories. She sets a new model that bines many elements affecting ICC and covers research results from sociopsychology, applied linguistics and sociology. In detail, ICC can be divided into three interrelated categories: cognitive, affective and operational ponents. They are interdependent and simultaneously present in actual munication situations. Altogether, they shape the overall capacity to participate in the crosscultural munication activities. The cognitive aspect of ICC is the mental capacities of prehension and ability to understand the meanings of various verbal and nonverbal codes. It reflects the capacity to identify and understand messages. The second aspect is the affective ponents that include adaptation motivation, identity flexibility, and aesthetic coorientation.
